I have not had any trouble putting MP3s on the iPhone 5. I haven't had it long and really have not payed a lot of attention to how it works, it may all go through itunes but I don't buy anything there. I buy from Amazon, I download two free live shows each week from Wolfgang's Vault, and I burn CDs. All go to different folders in "My Music" as MP3s. I send them to my iPhone, maybe I use itunes...  will pay more attention next time I add an album to the phone... but so far it has been quick and easy.
IIRC, I drag/drop files to itunes, then add them to device>iphone.. no problem.
I did notice the other day that my iphone was getting hot in my pocket after maybe 30 minutes of play through ear buds while working. The guy at the AT&T store said it should not be getting hot and maybe I should take to the Apple store... of course not the closest one.
It is my first smart phone... well, besides a Blackberry Pearl which wasn't much smarter than a pocket calculator. Next time I will probably go with the current Galaxy or HTC but this was easy so I did it and so far so good but I may end up paying for more Dropbox...

My daughter bought an used iMac laptop about 1.5 years ago. It died about 6 mo ago. She loved it until it died and to fix it was more than buying a good laptop with W8,  She got a Lenovo and it happy with it.

@Jim Roseberry... what do you think about the new *ahem... Pro Tools 11 ?? It is cool man... (runs away).

IMO (being somewhat serious), ProTools 11 is the coolest it's ever been.
It's now on-par (feature wise) with most other native DAW apps.
Only issue (right at this moment) is limited 3rd-party AAX 64Bit support.
ie:  If you make extensive use of Native Instruments plugins, you'll have to either use the 32Bit version of ProTools (v10.36 which can be installed along side PT11)... or use a "sub-host" like Vienna Ensemble Pro.

Jeez these whole "computer A versus computer B" fights have been going on at least since I was a kid, and back then it was ZX Spectrum versus Commodore 64. I still think the C-64 was the better machine by miles (of course it was - it had the SID chip). But 30 years later, what does it matter?

Or Reaper, which is probably the cheapest way of doing it.

I got rid of all of the iTunes hassle by simply purchasing a $10/month subscription to Spotify and installing their iPhone app. Hey presto, millions of songs just a tap away. And if you want to listen to them "offline" you can transfer them to your phone via Wi-Fi in a way that is still easier than using iTunes.

Me too Sharke. Spotify Premium is simply amazing. They have almost everything I want but some albums I still have to add. LAst I checked they have no BEATLES... but most everything else. I also subscribe the Wolfgang's Vault and it gives me two free live show downloads each week that I add. Last one was an Elton John show from 1970, they seem to be late putting the current free DL on the site (it is there now: Quicksilver Messenger Service: Fillmore East- June 7 1968). It usually goes Tue-Fri and Sat-Tue. Between this and Spotify I am good.
I keep getting spam emails from something called Paste.. I have been deleting them... but we are off topic, sorry! It started with something about the iPhone being a PITA because of iTunes. I think it must have gotten better. I can even use the Amazom Instant Video APP, however I cannot purchase movies or TV with the APP. I have to do it on the computer but them I can view on the iPhone or iPad, a small hassle but still half the price of iTunes.

Hey Jim.. I was trying to play off this in good humor:

You know... I often bump into younger folks who are into recording.
Usually happens at a computer store... or the local Guitar Center or Sam Ash
Almost without fail, they mention ProTools... trying to impress
Guess that means they're all professionals.

Thanks though, I do wonder about PT 11 sometimes but am not thinking of a change. I still have faith in Cakewalk. Change is hard but we will get there. Maybe you need a lefthanded mouse (runs away again)...

Jbow..did not mean to imply mp3s don't work on iPhones, iPad, etc. I just find it silly that one has to go throigh a conversion process to plau a file format that plays directly on even $5 generic devices. The forced use of b itunes is sething we get used to but I do find myself using my android phone for music more than my nanopod due to the ease of dragging and dropping Vs wanting for itunes to convert mp3 and every other format. Not to mention how it takes extra steps to share my own music with someone else if I am using apple

Agree, I will likely go with Samsung or HTC next go around. I do not like being forced into anything, not even something I may otherwise want to do, lol. I did misunderstand you before, thanks for clearing it up!
