Did I see other threads on this?

This is new for me... I can't believe it's been that long since I used an external synth, but here's what's happening... any pointers or ideas are welcome of course...

I've got a pair of tracks (1 MIDI, 1 Audio) setup to record MIDI, send to an external synth, and record the synth's output on the audio track (monitoring via Input Monitoring)... I've been doing this for years and playing is fine... I play my keyboard, see it register on meters for both tracks, and hear the audio...

When I finish recording and play it back, I see the meter on the MIDI track operating, but the synth is not receiving anything and hence no signal at the Sonar track...

If I drag that MIDI clip to  the MIDI source for a VSynth, it plays...

I've checked my MIDI routing a dozen times or more but I can't understand why it's (suddenly) not playing from the clip which is not muted...?

I also found that when I quantize this same track, it no longer plays on the VSynth track either???

What's that all about...?

Much thanks for listening...

Hmmm...

Still the same, but now the Quantize didn't stop playback... I closed and opened Sonar...

Possible midi channel issue?

Could the external leyboard not be declared as a midi output device in Preferences?

What is the output set to on the midi track?

Just tossing those out there - I have not used external keyboards as anything but controllers for a long while.  I'll dust off the brain and see if anything else pops into my consciousness.

A midi volume fade at the end of the track? What happens if you turn up the volume slider on the midi controller? Just thinking some sort of automation that's not being reset at the beginning of the song.

Thanks Guys...

I'm not certain, but I'm suspecting that something is fouled in my medusa's hair of MIDI routing. Maybe I haven't done any external MIDI tracks since building this DAW?

On all my earlier machines I installed a Unitor 8 (8 port MIDI interface). One of which (my primary DAW) then had the first 5 MIDI ports routed to my Synapse MIDI patch bay to control my assorted MIDI devices.

As there is no longer a parallel/serial port and all attempts at connecting those via USB conversion failed, I am currently forced to some changes and I thought I had it wired correctly... Very hard for me to access this cabling...

I now have the Audiobox MIDI port connected to a port on the Synapse so that I can route to the external gear even tho duced to a single MIDI port... I'm thinking that in the difficult situation for me accessing the back of the MIDI patch bay, I may have done something wrong...

I'm now finding that even tho the patch bay shows routing these paths correctly, I can play my controller Roland keyboard and the Kurzweil rack is responding with Sonar and all other programs closed. I can't find any Audiobox software that has any MIDI config of any kind...

...and I'm getting doubled notes when I record in Sonar!

So, somehow I've got to access my wiring and verify that. The back of the Synapse is difficult for me to "read" as it doesn't use simple parallel rows of plugs but instead uses any array of alternating diagonal groups... <sigh>

Cramming my head behind the racks and attempting to read and sort decades of old interlaced cables will be my upcoming torture.

For now, I used a Vsynth which sounds fine... I'm not sure if I can get to this work today due to other pressures...

Thanks for the helpful suggestions... I'll post my findings after I can do the above...

Ahhh...

Problem solved (I think)...

Turns out the wiring was correct but my recollection of what I had done was in error... ;-)

Between that and the rather cryptic hex system of routing that the synapse uses, things were not set correctly. I guess this is the first time I've used a hardware synth with this DAW... what a surprise! ;-)

Some kind of loop is in the system (intentionally for some other/older purpose) as well adding to the confusion... But I seem to have it working normally again with a simple (?) patch change on the Synapse....

Time will tell... Once again my own confusion created the problem. ;-)

Much Thanks Again...

The doubled notes may well be that you need to turn Local Off on your external keyboards.  That is a frequent cause of doubled notes.  You play them once, then they are told again to play through the midi connections.

Turning Local Off is usually found in your keyboard's Functions.  That way, the sound is only triggered by the midi messages coming back in from Sonar, and the doubling goes away.
