I know it's only been a week or so since my last music video, "Shadows on the Ceiling," but I already have a new video out for the track "The Lie" off my upcoming album An Unseen Sky.

For me the drums are either to busy or to present, it also needs some additional ear candy to stand alone as piece, under video/soundtrack it would probably work but as it is, it just is, sorry.

Sorry you didn't like it. To me this is a slow burning tension piece meant to open the album. Funny thing is I absolutely love those drums, but hey, you can't please everyone. And if it works as a soundtrack, then I did my job :-)

BTW in case anyone finds this post after April 1st, it was an April Fools Joke haha. The video that is, the song is really on my new album.

David, I caught the  joke before I read your post-good one.  This is a dark, moody piece that opens up slowly, yet it maintains a constant energy level because of the drums, which I like.  I like your textures and balance, which comes through very well, as I was sitting off axis while listening.  As for the length and arrangement of this song, I can only suggest that you think of "time lapsed photography" when doing your final mix, if you know what I mean ;)  Otherwise, this is a super piece!

I would double check the mix against ear buds and built in laptop speakers, because I agree with the earlier post, the drums are totally drowning out the melodic synths. They are quite busy, which made me wonder if I was listening to a trip hop piece or a Porcupine Tree type piece, but they can both be right. But I would duck the percussion several db and just see if it helps on lesser quality listening systems. I have this happen to me all the time, where a mix sounds totally locked in and I've even taken it around to double check...but then I listen on one new system and it's like "omg the balance is totally off!" 
 
 

Thanks Lynn! Glad you liked the track. And I hadn't really thought about the possibility of using it with a timelapse but that's a great idea. I could see it fitting reeally well. Especially if I did a little bit of a different arrangement with it like you said... Most time lapse videos I've seen usually have a part in the middle where things fall down and get really like ethereal for lack of a better word before building back up for the big finish... But I could totally see a rearrangement like that.
 
And wicked, thanks for your comments too. I definitely checked it in many setups (off the top of my head, my studio monitors, my studio headphones, my laptop, my surround sound TV, my casual headphones, my mom's stereo, my dad's stereo and my car). To be honest, while yea, the drums are very big and busy, while I'm not trying to disregard you guys comments, I very much appreciate them, but that overpowering drum sound is kind of exactly what I was going for in this case. Especially at the end when the bigger, wilder drums come in. I just wanted them to really really kind of come in and devastate the whole piece, adding crazy energy without actually raising the tempo. Like I said I definitely appreciate you guys comments and will keep these thoughts in mind in the future, but yea, when those drums come in, I can't help but air drum to my own song haha, which makes me all kinds of happy. :-)
 
It's funny because these last 2 videos (this and "Shadows on the Ceiling") both have really big drums, and both the drums were the biggest criticisms I've received. I'll have to make sure the next video is for a track where I didn't mix the drums so big :-)

Whew, sorry about that. I left my last msg from my phone so I couldn't go into detail.
 
So, the song is great. The programming is great and the sounds are very nice. The drums just sound off to me because they're not in the same soundscape as everything else. They're very dry, and everything else is very wet, and they're way upfront. That kick drum is the closest thing in that song to the listener's ears, which is backwards from the way mixes like that normally go. Drums can sit properly in a mix and sound like part of the whole and still drive the track without being simply the loudest element. I don't know if the other synths are on a shared verb bus or not, but I'd consider using a send from the drums to the same verb to get it to gel a bit more and see if it tightens up. 
 
It certainly doesn't sound "bad" in any way, so try and hear that without any defensiveness (it's okay, I'm like that too!). Plus, it certainly doesn't hurt to play around with it. It can always end up being your "dub" remix. :-)
 

Interesting feedback, and no, no offense here, don't worry. I have plenty to learn! Haha. But yea, using sends is still something I've been reluctant to learn. You're right that it would probably make everything gel better, but I've just always been the type to throw multiple effects on every track. Certainly not the most efficient way of doing things haha.
