  • Moving Overlapping Clips Between Take Lanes

I've had a couple of times where I've ended up with multiple clips in the same take lane that overlap for part of their duration.  At a certain point, I generally want to move the clips into separate lanes so I can edit them independently.  When I select a clip and then move it to a new lane, it takes the overlapping clip, splits it at the selection boundary and moves the overlapping section of the clip I don't want moved along with the clip I do want moved.  I then have a completely hidden fragment of a clip that I can't get to.  <-- I hope that made sense....

My workaround has been to slip edit the clip I want to move until it no longer overlaps.  Move it.  Then slip edit it back to it's original starting point.  Is there a way to get Sonar to move just the clip that's selected rather than all of the clips in the range that's selected?

I'm using X2.

What I've had to do is this:
1) Set the Now-Time marker to where the clip starts.
2) Highlight the clip.3) Keeping it in the same Take Lane, click/drag (move) it to the right or left so that it completely clears the clip it overlaps (even though that overlapped clip is in a different Take Lane).
4) Drop the clip you're moving to let it fall in the new location on the same Take Lane it was on before you started moving it.
5) Now, click/drag it to the Lane you want it. Drop it there.
6) Next, click/drag the clip to the Now-Time and drop it.

It's a weird workaround, but I've had to do this numerous times, because of issues Take Lanes seem to have.

Yeah, this bug has been discussed by myself and a few others quite a bit as well as several other quirky behaviors w/ Take Lanes.   I usually just crop the clip so it doesn't overlap and then move it.  Then pull back the part that I cropped out once I've moved the overlapping clip.

At this point, I've come to view Take Lanes as one of the most poorly implemented features I've seen in a long time.  It was one of the features I was looking forward to the most when it was first announced.  Now I can't stand it most of the time.  Some of it just makes you wonder how it even got out of the door in its current state.  But hey, what can you do?

Sounds like you two are doing the same basic thing that I am to get around the issue.  I have to say, though, that I'm finding take lanes a significant improvement on layers.  I had to go back to an X1 project last week because I had to overdub sax into an old 32 bit project.  I had to comp the parts in layers and it seemed really clunky.  I'm pretty good with layers, but I was surprised by how big a step back they felt like compared to take lanes.

I think lanes definitely have room for improvement - this thread is case in point - but on the whole, I count the lanes themselves as an improvement and a step in the right direction.
