  • Friday After Breakfast (here's the new mix with bass)

It's been a long time since I posted a new song. I just finished a new one called "Friday After Breakfast". I would appreciate any feedback and suggestions about the mix and the song overall. I kept it real simple- one rhythm guitar, drums, flute, and one vocal.

Edit: Ok. I made some changes here:
I added a bass.
I cloned the guitar. Panned one hard left, put some delay on the other and panned it hard right. Thought that might be a simple way to add more width to the stereo field.
Changed the drum kit.
Panned the flute a little more off center.
Took a little high end off of the lead voc. Added a couple of harmony vox on the last chorus.

Please let me know what you think- what works, what doesn't.

This mix was done in headphones. I found out while adding the bass that my monitors' foam surrounds are deteriorating and were buzzing. So I'm going to try to replace them.

Thanks.

Hey there quirky chord man, sounds good, lyrics are suggestive and sly.

I absolutely would bring the bass up, you can barely hear it. Is there bass on this? I think you'd need the bass to drive the tune. It's a good song, kind of Al Stewart-ish maybe? I'll have another helping of bass, please!

cheers,
-Tom

Nice ... reminds me a bit of Bruce Cockburn (good thing)

Enjoyable tune nice played and sung Doug, For the mix perhaps a little to all down the middle a little subtle panning of the guitar and flute anywhere between 10 to 20% of centre just to open up a cleaner space for the vocal.

Nice job though thanks for sharing.

Tom- No, there is no bass in the song. I was thinking that the guitar part alone would carry the song kinda like in the days when I played solo in the clubs. I think that's where those "quirky chords" came from. I'll think about adding some bass. Glad you like the chords and lyrics.

Tlawhon- Bruce Cockburn, I know the name but I can't say that I know any of his music.

Wookiee- There is some panning there but maybe it's too subtle. I'll take a look at that.

Thanks for listening.

I really like this Doug - just my cup of tea.
I am a big fan of Kings of Convenience and I'm getting their vibe from this.
Would you be interested in doing a song together sometime?

Nice chord changes + vocal melodies... very cool, good stuff.   The acoustic sounds really good, as does the flute solo.   Some of the drum parts sound a little off-time but nothing drastic.

Mix-wise...  I'm really missing that bottom end.   I think get what you were going for but it sounds like type of song that could use the whole band.   An acoustic or fretless bass (real or otherwise) might work nicely in this context.

Steve, thanks. I'm glad you like it. I'll try adding a bass to it. I also had some cool BG vox that came in on the last verse and chorus that I left out of the mix to keep it simpler. Maybe I'll put it all together and re-post the full ensemble version.

Nice song Doug....the chords/rhythm remind me a bit of America (Ventura Hwy.). I agree with what most said on the lower end and even possibly bringing up the acoustic a dB or 2.....(at times the drums/cymbal crashes) seemed louder than the acoustic.  The vocals came out very nice....listening via my H-phones.
