Hey Folks,

Ok so respect due to VSampler.  It has served me well since way back when.  Got very buggy in later Sonar versions and since I've gone 64bit its dying way way too often and crashes:

Exception in TSControl.WndProc (TSStringGrid):"Access violation at address 02932ADE in module 'VSampler3.dll'. Read of address 064A0004"
Reason: Msg=513
in module System line (0) in procedure Move
Please notify SpeedSoft with the above information !

Support is long since dead so its time to drop it for once and for all.   My problem is though, I loved one feature it was quite brilliant at and I simply must find an alternative that is capable of the same.  PLAYABLE AUDITIONING of Samples BEFORE importing.  I could simply browse to folder (including sub directories if wished) and highlight a sample within its interface and immediately play it on the keys.

Kontakt cannot do this (which I'm shocked about) so I'm on the hunt for its replacement.  I know ShortCircuit has had its praise and sadly is also dead but I never had luck with it in Sonar on my system.  Haven't tried it in 64bit Bridged but assume that same.

Can anyone suggest a good Softsampler that has this immediate playable auditioning function I cannot live without?

Much thanks for your thoughts,
Ste

Have you tried the TX16Wx Sampler? You would need to preview using Windows Media Player in the file browser but the sampler is 64bit (and free).

Tried that mate but no dice.  Must be playable on keys as I tend to pitch samples when auditioning so the feature is a must have.

Thanks though ;>

Have you tried UVI Workstation? It has a drag and drop browser. It also does loops and it plays wave, rex, and aiff files.

The workstation itself is free to download and use. UVI makes money by selling sound packages for the workstation. It is a fully functioning workstation without their sound packages and it works within Sonar and outside of Sonar.

I haven't used vsampler in a while (and no longer own it) but have you tried it with JBridge?

Thanks guys.

Tried UVI which is a little closer but again the drag/drop slows the process down when browsing 100's of samples.

Jbridged Vsampler but no joy.  Its unusable with its intermittent crashes.

VSAMPLER and SHORT CIRCUIT still the only ones I know that you can 1 click Playable/audition samples on keys.  Theres gota be smth out there.  Surely such  feature is important for "sample heads"

I bought MachFive from Motu to replace Vsampler and E-Mu EmulatorX2.  The sounds that come with it sound fantastic though I'm a bit disappointed at it's ability to read other sample formats as advertised.  It seems to handle sound-fonts pretty good but as far as importing any of the E-Mu stuff, I've had no luck so far.    Even bought Chicken Systems' Translator and still have not been able to get the Emulator sounds imported in a usable way without massive editing.

It does have a very nice Library/Auditioning function if you have a lot of sounds.  Not sure if there's a demo available but I think it's basically the UVI workstation in Motu clothing.

Best,

I don't know if you're aware of this... but once you load a sample into Kontakt, you can actually step threw all the samples in the folder just like browsing ROM based samples. Both the mapping and sample editors- have arrows located where you see the loaded samples name, that allow you to step forwards or backwards to change the loaded sample while playing.

@Guitar Dude:  Can you "1 click" a file and play it on keys before importing it for editing?

@Kine:  Yes mate.  I saw that.  Useful no doubt but still not quite what I'm after.  Vsampler would display 1000's of samples in its Maximized interface (including sub directories) and I could navigate so easily and simply click once on a file and play on keys.

Its just how I work.  Searching for sounds takes a large amount of my time and so anything less will have a major impact.  ;<

I don't think it has this function exactly, but I have always found Independence Pro very easy to use. There is a free version where you could test the functionality. To audition as you want.  Right click on the instrument, Options - import audio files - select sample - Import with Quick Mapping.

Details of the free version -
  • Based on the powerful Indpendence Audio Engine
  • Audio import support for up to 25 audio files. Load your own sounds into Independence Free and create your own instruments!
  • VST effect plug-in import: you can now load 3rd party VST effect plug-ins into Independence Free!
  • As well as VST, AU and Standalone now the RTAS interface is also available for Mac and Windows
  • Virtual keyboard, Time-Stretching & Pitch Shifting, E-License Instruments compatibility as well as all other features that are found in Independence
  • No time or memory restrictions
  • Commercial use allowed
  • For Mac OS X 10.6 (Universal Binary), Windows XP, Windows Vista & Windows 7 (32 & 64-bit)

If you decide to but there are basic and Pro options, the difference is in the bundled libraries. There are some excellent orchestra, saxes and basses in PRO
