savioThanks!  This video may contain the answer.  Just previewed it, and it mentions the exact issue I'm experiencing.

That pretty much sums it all up.........I watched the first few minutes of the video and it does mention a fix for the same problem you posted early on:
It's the ASIO4ALL audio output that Sonar isn't accepting; going into "Prefences"-Audio-etc. simply tells me what I already know--no sound card output.
.
Good luck I'm sure you'll get it working.

To everyone else.....don't get yer panties in a bunch ladies. Oh and I have 2 hard drives and 8 gigs of Ram and..........

The TOS may restrain me from posting how worthless and irritating these kinds of posts are, so I won't, though I am certainly thinking it.

My luck continues to be about zero with this issue.  The Youtube video seemed to explain the issue, but came up short on solutions.  (!)  At any rate, looked at my ASIO4ALL WDM list, where "Realteck HD Audio Line input" is X'd out.  ("Status: Unavailable!")  I found a couple threads online that discuss this very problem, but no luck with the proposed solutions.  Here's the most pertinent one:

My main question at this point: If I get an audio interface, will it bypass the sound set-up in my PC, thus ending the ASIO4ALL-vs.-Windows 7 conflicts?

And Realiteck HD Audio refers to...?  I know it's not a sound card, but is it a... what?  Driver?

Please let me know if an audio interface will take over the functions (not) being performed by my PC and the temperamental ASIO4ALL driver....  Thanks!

Okay, why can't I insert a link?

I type a heading, highlight it, press the Insert/Edit Link button, enter the link, get underlined text.  I save it.

Then, nothing.  Aieee.  At this point, I'm faced with two options: 1) laughing softly to myself as I sit here, humming a fragment of a nursery tune over and over, or 2) staring straight ahead, dribbling my lips.  Suggestions?

Oh.  Dang.  Thanks.  Oh, well, anyway, there are a couple of threads, and likely more, that address the same issue.  It appears to be a common ASIO/Windows 7 snare.

So... will an audio interface bypass the whole PC sound mess?  This is what I'm hoping (as a "newbie" to audio interfaces but eager to go that roue).

The good news is that an audio interface designed for DAW will make using the DAW easier and more reliable. You can still use windows sound for other purposes or you can route everything through the new audio interface, your choice.

That's what I need to hear!  Cool; thanks.  What prices are we looking at?  For a decent interface, that is.  I don't need the best (except for software; that's why I chose Cakewalk).  I think the cheapest I spotted on line was $199.00-ish.  (Always wanted to type "$199.00-ish".)

Though my driver/Windows issue persists, I've learned a ton of stuff from this thread so far.  Many thanks to all!

As I mentioned earlier, I owned my first music composing software in the late 1980s.  My Macintosh 512K could do everything needed, MIDI-wise, including sound on sound, but of course couldn't make audio files, let alone mix them.  My Mac lasted all the way to 2000, or thereabouts!  My only post-Mac composing software has been Noteworthy Composer, which is a fine, cheap program but, of course, limited.  Hence, Sonar has been a challenge, but mostly a rewarding one (when I'm not foaming at the mouth).

By the way, now that I realize I have a driver/motherboard setup and not a sound card, this probably accounts for why I'm not finding sound card menus in Windows.  No sound card=no sound card menu.  Like I said, I'm learning a lot.

Depends on your I/O requirements. The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is a decent budget solution for about $150 and is definitely a trade up from your current situation.

Input/output?  Mine is very basic.  I'm primarily interested in mixing the excellent Casio audio I have, as opposed to operating multiple boxes/stations/whatever.  (Such is my low tech curve!)  I'll check out the Focusrite Scarlett 212.  I'm very excited about this, since I've been getting great Sonar results despite the PC issues.

The audio in this mp3 sounds much better coming from Sonar, but it gives an idea.  A tune I wrote c. 2000: //app.box.com/s/1aye4r3xawmbopelux9g  (Add the https:, and the link should be good to go).
