  • Group Take Lanes in X2?

Does anybody know if we can group take lanes, so they can be soloed together?

An example is multi-tracked drums, with multiple takes.  Say you want to A/B the drum takes.  How do you flip between takes for all the drum tracks at once, without going to each track (kick, snare, overheads, etc) and soloing the matching take lanes?

I asked the same question a while back. I thought it might be a bug that quick groups or the like didn't allow you to solo or mute the corresponding take lanes in other selected tracks. I was told that that was the way it was designed. Therefore, I think the answer to your question is no.

You can always send in a feature request, which is what I would recommend.

I'm not really sure, but what happens if you select all of the drum tracks, and then Ctrl+Solo the first Take Lane in one of those tracks?  I'd imagine that's the only way it could work, assuming of course that lanes actually do work like other quick group combinations.

Obviously you don't want Auto-zoom turned on so you can see more than one track's worth of lanes.

Thanks Steve, but take lanes do not respond to quick groups (nor can they be regular-grouped).

Huh....    I thought just about everything was quick group-able, so I can't imagine why the same lane numbers between different tracks would be excluded.  Perhaps it's something that they just haven't done yet.

For drums, what I'm doing as a workaround: solo one of the overheads and center it.  Then I can quickly flip between the takes to compare performances.  Would be nice with all the drum mics together, but since the OH picks up the whole kit, it's good enough to hear rough performance.

I just ran into this same problem.  I can't believe Sonar can't do this. There is such an obvious need, especially for drums.  Coming from 8.5 recently, the whole take lanes "improvement" is has  been quite a failure for me.  I end up taking a lot more time to do simple tasks. Partially is is because I am still learning X2, but it is also due to things like this where the program behaves in a way that is seemingly very illogical.  I can group takes and select them together, so why can't I solo what I selected?

In any event another work around I wanted to share is that you can add take lanes from different tracks to several select groups, select the group, and then use the mute tool (or hit the "k" key) to mute everything you don't want to hear.

Hoping Sonar listens and makes some significant changes to take lanes in the next update.

Studious,

Some people use track templates to accomplish being able to mute and solo sets of drum tracks so you can do multiple takes and then mute and solo the different takes.

To do this, create a track template with all of the drum tracks in a folder routed to your drum bus. You can set all the mic inputs for each track then export as a track template.

Now, before each new take, add your track template to your project. You can now arm for record, mute and solo all the drums for each take using the mute and solo buttons at the folder levels. You can change the folder names to represent the take numbers. All your routing for the buses will be included in each template. You can still cut an paste across the tracks.

You have the added advantage of being able to keep them grouped for use with audio snap if you want to try to tighten the drums to the project timing.

That's a good tip gswitz. Gonna have to try that next time I get a trap kit in....

I wish they could too. I find the MSR buttons don't work very reliably either so I don't use them. I right click to mute. It's a pain.
