I am curious if I am the only one here who has the I-want-a-new-plugin syndrom. I noticed over the last few weeks, if not months, I am mainly looking at the latest greatest plugin (in my case usually instruments), checking them all out, reading about them, asking about them and hardly buying any... and when I do buy it, I fool around with it, I say to myself: 'yes, great plugin'... and instead of actually making music with it, I start looking at the next plugin...

It's very tiresome...

I think I simply have a writers block but because I do want to be connected to the music making business I have no other option then to check out the next best plugin, hoping it will let my creativity flow... which seldom happens.

My last two purchases were EZKeys (because I was making backing tracks for someone who wanted a lot of piano in it: in the end I found out 9 of the 10 included patterns don't translate very well to other chord schemes... I don't even have the plugin installed anymore: anyone interested? And the guy who needed those backing tracks changed his genre to EDM) and (not exactly a plugin) Sonar X2 Producer (because I liked the new interface about which I saw a lot of YouTube movies and I was very excited about the Pro Channel and getting into that very like a real pro: after installing it I thought 'the interface is indeed nice... but I still can't write lyrics, and the subtleties of the Pro Channel effects are totally wasted on me: I can't even hear the difference between them or the good old Sonitus effects...).

I am such a loser. So now I am looking at a new bass (Orange Tree Rick!) and guitar (Ample Guitar T) while I already have Scarbee Pre-Bass of which I have yet to use one of the articulations in a tune of mine (up to know I only played it like I would play a Dim Pro bass preset) and MusicLab's RealGuitar (which I mainly used for rhythm and fingerpicking backgrounds for which it is great: I never wrote a 'real' guitarpiece for it... so why the heck should I get that Rick and T anyway?!?

As I said, it's very tiresome...

Anyone else here who knows what I am talking about?

+1

But I do find I go from flooded with work to the point that I resent it to not really doing anything for weeks.

I find scheduling in a little time, like a kid's practice schedule, often helps. And turning off the gear and taking my acoustic to a park is a nice summer time activity too.

The Producer Content Club does provide a little relief from the syndrome by giving new toys periodically.

For the last couple of years I was like you, but I finally stopped doing it (luckily I'm satisfied with what I have.....mostly). There are many plugins/samples I ended up not using at all (ManyGuitar, BFD Eco, Sampletekk Black Grand, etc.) or I haven't really used although I really want to (OrangeTree Cherry Bass, Steven Slate Drums 4, etc.).

Oh, I shouldn't spend my precious time on posting....gotta create music.

OP: Yep I know exactly what you are saying...

...Which is why I have resolved that for the next two (count 'em!) years I'm going to focus on learning what I already have. Starting with Reaktor.

Good luck to you though, we're both gonna need it.

I have found that acquiring a new VSTi usually results in at least one new song. Because I'll sit at the keyboard and try all of the presets and something catches my ear and before you know it I'm putting a little riff down in a project. Even if I just leave it like that for weeks, I know I'll come back and work on it eventually. I have lots of little ideas kicking around from playing with new synths etc.

But usually, the reality of the new plug/instrument is a lot less than how it seemed it would be in your mind. I have Jamstix Aquisition Syndrome (JAS) at the minute because I'm convinced that jamming along with it will make be a better guitar player and also transform all the drums on all of my tracks, which naturally I'm going to find the time to go back to and rework. In reality, I know that if I buy it, it will take me weeks before I can be bothered to read the manual.

Though not cured of my affliction, I am on a maintenance program wherein I buy a cheap (<=$50) Kontakt library each month. This keeps the cravings at bay and as Sharke noted, often does inspire a song or two. Having Kontakt is like having a prescription for methadone.

Should I suddenly get the shakes of withdrawal mid-month, I can usually tame them by creating a new patch in Omnisphere. That, too, is often a catalyst for a new song, and costs nothing.

Lest I sound too sanctimonious by implying that I've beaten the disease, I must confess that this week will see a new Zebra added to my stable. Then, the Rick.

Dude Ivey
I love getting new plugins. I've gotten to where i will demo it first to make sure ill like it and use it but it's inspiring to get a new toy! Thats why i get up and go to work everyday!

I'm more into processing plug-ins, but I know the feeling well.
