Here's the problem:
1.) The quality is good -- really great amp sims, compressors, EQs, VA synths, hyrbid synths, virtual instruments, sample content, etc. etc. etc.
2.) High bandwidth + easy access = credit card abuse
3.) The ubiquitous "no-brainer" sales, voucher coupons, etc.
I really think we are in a heyday of sorts when it comes to the quality of some of the products we're seeing today... the Scuffhams, Amplitubes, U-He Divas, Orange Tree Samples, etc. etc.... combine the innovation and quality of the products with lots of competition -- how many great high-end string libraries can compete with VSL today (in relative terms! overall quality, playability, etc.)? There are more than a few, and they're all competing for the scant dollars of poor musician folk.
Just tonight I just cashed in a $30 voucher at NI for their 50's Drummer... been on my short list since it was released. So $70 for two great sounding drum kits... it was a 8GB ISO download that my fiber connection chewed through in under 20 minutes. To put things in perspective... in that same 20 minutes I can get in my car, drive across town, and drop $70 on milk, bread, TP, a few pounds of coffee, and whatever else, not to mention the cost of burning the gas. I'd prefer to sit here in my underwear and enjoy a fantastic product for making music... the NI purchase is a.) just too cheap, and b.) just too easy.
Did I say I just bought drums from NI? I guess I should also admit that over the weekend I also dropped some coin on a few BFD expansions... you know, because FXpansion is having a 50% off sale on expansion packs and DCAM patches... and... well... 50% off is 50% off.
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
