That's weird. It's worked when I've done it. Maybe try restarting Sonar then give it another shot. If it still doesn't work open a new project and make some MIDI clips and try it there. If it works in the new project something my be going wonky in your current project. It happens sometimes. Cheers.

its a strange occurrence where if you make an edit in prv on a midi clip, if you bounce the clip to a groove clip and then make another edit to the groove clip in the prv it starts another layer.
or if you have one reg. clip and a groove clip butting up against each other and try to copy a small piece of midi over the adjoining sections, it creates another layer on the same midi track, but this layer cant be expanded.

I think the contents of groove clips are supposed to be confined to their boundaries in order to support looping, so copying notes outside those boundaries would generate a new clip since the new notes can't be looped (because they're outside the boudaries).   However, I can't recall if "regular" clips are supposed to work that way as well...

and the only way to make the groove clip and the new clip as one new clip together is to bounce both to clips.
and sometimes just lassoing the clip, there lays a piece hiding underneath and sonar doesn't catch both.
so when you grab that clip to move it, it leaves behind pieces of the newly edited clip.
 

Yup...   That's why the right click lasso-select you mentioned previously works well for this by dragging completely around all clips rather than left+click dragging across them and missing one that's hidden.

the first thing I wrote in this thread was "try right click lassoing".
that's one of the ways you select in x2.

I seem to have missed that line. You're right, that's strange. I hope the OP will reply and explain the details.
I also use lassoing when merging clips. I love the the new right-click lassoing introduced in X2. :)

Thanks to everyone for your responses! I seem to have somehow missed subscribing to the thread or I would have gotten back here earlier.
 
It turns out that the right-click lasso does work, but the left click selection with the smart tool doesn't work. I actually didn't know about the right-click to lasso selection method so this is a new interaction for me. I am definitely appreciating the improvement from X1 to X2 in MIDI editing, it seems more intuitive and actually a little more like the old Sonar. I added in global tool switching key bindings for:
 
Shift + s = Select Tool
Shift + d = Draw Tool
Shift + a = SmArt Tool
 
Makes it easier so I don't have to reach up the the Function Buttons (F5, etc)
 
Now, if I could just keep X2a from crashing, I will be all good!

That video is 26 minutes long! And the 1st 3 minutes already showed me stuff that I had no idea about. Normally I hate video for learning because you can't skim the material to get to the important stuff, but I think that this video will be pretty useful.
