  • Automated Mute Has Never Worked

What is the deal with this?  I have posted topics on this before but cannot get this to work ever or at all.  What am I missing?

• I right-click Mute and select Switch to Automated Mute
• With the track Write-enabled and Read-enabled, I play the track and click the Mute button off and on
• I can see the automated mute in the track lane, but when I play the track back, the Mute automation does nothing.  Whatever I last muted is muted and whatever I last unmuted is unmuted.  The Mute does not respond to the automation.

Every time I have mentioned this folks have been helpful with alternate suggestions, but the other options won't do what I need:
• Clip automation will not help because I am using Melodyne in the track and am not ready to bounce (if indeed, I ever bounce).
• Fader automation will help later but I am working on the track and not ready for the final mix.  I want to be able to hear the right vocal takes while tracking.

Is there something I am not getting?  Thanks.

When you say click the mute button are you doing this with a mouse or a control surface?

I find a lot of the channel controls to be hit or miss as far as automation, especially the MSR buttons. Would an FX Chain with Channel Tools inserted get you by for now? I'm not understanding why Melodyne is preventing you from using envelopes but I'm sure there's a reason. Cheers.

I don't know if this is the same with the mute button, but there are also problems whereby automation for the the on/off switch on FX Chains won't automate unless the ProChannel in question is open in the console, and whereby the on/off switch for the arpeggiator won't automate unless the track in question is in focus. I mentioned the FX Chain button issue a while ago and someone from Cakewalk said that it was a "limitation" rather than a bug  and that fixing it would break other things, so they're leaving it as it is. I wonder if the same applies to the mute button, i.e. the automation won't work unless that track is in focus.

Hey, guys, thanks for replying.

1-I am clicking the mute button with the mouse in Sonar as I have been advised that Automated Mute does not work right with a control surface.  (In my case, it doesn't seem to work with the on-screen interface, either.)
2-Regarding clip automation and Melodyne, once a track is in Melodyne you can mute or even delete the audio clip and it won't matter because what you hear is the copy in Melodyne.  Now that I write this, I could possibly try muting all audio clips and then try automating turning Melodyne off and on in the FX bin, but that is really more work than just automating faders and redoing them later for the final mix.
3-Automating Channel Tools is a really clever idea.  That is a good thought for other situations as well.
4-About sharke's point: if I understand right, he is saying you need to be in Console View to get this to work right.  Maybe that's the problem: since I have a hardware control surface, I am never in Console View. I was clicking the Automated Mute in Track View.

All this said, I really wish automated mute would work correctly.  I feel I am doing something wrong.

For mute, I manually add nodes with jump curve to envelope, works every time.

It could also be that you just need to have the track in focus for it to work, which means you could select it from the track pane. Or maybe having the inspector open would work. Worth a try - if you can get it to work when the track's in focus, at least you know it's a bug (yes Cakewalk...a bug...not a limitation).

You're not doing anything wrong. What you're doing is how it should work. There is functionality in Sonar that is just plain broken, because it's an unfinished program.

Automated mute DOES work.

You are probably missing one vital step - when the envelope is written to the track, right click the mute button and select "Switch to automated mute"

Nice one, Bristol_Jonesey, I didn't know that.

I don't tend to automate mute, but split clips and mute the clips (now that I've finally remembered to press K, not Q). I'm always pleased to learn something new about Sonar, though.
