  • How to Copy Paste MIDI Into Same Take Lane?

Hello All--

I'm brand new to the X version of Sonar and am struggling a little bit--so I thought this group might know this answer right off the top of your head.

I'm using kontakt 5 player with Modern Drummer and dragging grooves into a MIDI track in X2. That all works fine--no problems. However, (there's always a however--right?) when I want to either copy/paste a MIDI groove within the MIDI track or drag another groove out of kontakt, a new track lane is created each time--but only viewable if I click the add track lane (+) icon.

What I would like to be able to do on my MIDI tracks is be able to copy/paste or drag a new MIDI groove into the same, one track lane on the same track. I'm fairly confident there's a simple tick box I missed somewhere.

Any help is always appreciated.

There is a setting in Preferences somewhere along the lines of Create a New Lane or something but I think it's for recording. Not sure if it'll help with this. When I want different different clips to merge I just do the MIDI bounce thing so it all shows up in one clip/prv view.

I am not sure why one would use take lanes for this. Just drop or copy/paste the loops in the MIDI track. I did open take lanes on a MIDI track and dropped a few MIDI loops into the first take lane. Also did a few copy/paste operations in the take lane. It did not add another take lane. Don't have Kontakt to test with.

If the loops overlap at all it would force a new lanes even if there isn't any actual data where the overlap occurs. If they follow the same tempo/time sig and snap is enabled though that probably should be happening. Maybe the loops have some kind of silent lead in.

Oh and it's been a while but I think there might be a Paste setting that can affect this behavior. Maybe take a look at once going on there if you have the dialog disabled. Blend old and new maybe?

That is true if the loops are dropped in the track but not if the loops are dropped in the take lane. If I wanted to consolidate lanes, lasso and bounce clips or drag/drop clips between lanes.

Thanks all. I'm aware of how to move the MIDI grooves once they are pasted in a separate take lane, but that is a hassle. I want to just paste them all in the same take lane like Sonar 8.

I'll check the paste options.

I like Lanes but they don't always seem to behave consistently. Sometimes I get new lanes when pasting and sometimes I don't.

If a copy and paste scenario creates a new lane, you can drag it back to the previous one.

You can also use ctrl+alt+V and select how you want it to paste, again, with varied results.

Personally I don't worry about having a bunch of lanes because it's more of a visual reference than actually having a bunch of tracks under the main track. It's more of a way to separate your work for easier editing. Click the OFF button and they all go to the main track clip.

Just out of curiosity: why bother with the lanes when you clearly don't want to be bothered with them...? Simply use the main track! I don't fully understand what's the problem and why you would want everything to stay in one lane.

Unless I'm doing something wrong, regardless of whether I have the take lane display on or off, when I paste the MIDI info it creates a new take lane: "a new track lane is created each time--but only viewable if I click the add track lane (+) icon. " Which I mentioned in my original post
So, I have to manually add a take lane (+ icon) just to be able to see the newly pasted MIDI data. If I turn off the take lane view, I do not see the newly pasted MIDI data--which I'm sure you can understand is not workable.
