  • Should I Put Together a Second Book of SONAR Tips with the Remaining Tips? (p.9)

You know Craig, I could have have been wrong, but after your tearful tirade and name calling, I'm not feeling so bad. I'm sure that whatever charitable organization  receiving the proceeds from the books you listed is extremely grateful.

Well without getting into details they're not charitable organizations, they're medical institutions dealing with two immediate family members who have long-term illnesses. Being unemployed is not helping this situation.

You should realise that when you do something from the heart, you're not supposed to run around and tell people how much you've given for nothing.

Normally I wouldn't have said anything, but what you implied was also said in the Reddit discussion on Cakewalk closing down, where someone stated how all the content and books I did was just me "lining my pockets." I was willing to let that go but you know how the internet is..."Well these guys said it, and John said it, so it must be true." I'm sensitive about this; I wanted to set the record straight to protect my reputation because no one other than a few Cakewalk people knew that I wasn't making anything from these products, so no one else was going to correct you.

I do feel I came down too hard on you, because you were also paying the dues for the other people who had made the same kind of statements and I was sick of it. All I was trying to do was create alternate income streams to save Cakewalk. If anyone wants to get on my case for anything and be 100% accurate, you can say it was stupid of me to think that doing these kind of things could save Cakewalk.

Gibson owns everything that is posted on the their forum, including this thread.

Yes, but I had a "cut out" agreement when I signed on (the same as the other companies for whom I've done writing) that I can use what I write in derivative works but they can also use what I write in any derivative works they want to do. I own the rights on this basis to everything I've written since 1975. However, to be safe, that is why I did not include all the comments from other community people, and when I did, I changed them sufficiently to be an original work.

I won't get involved in a lengthy flame war about this. You said your piece, I said mine. I hope book #2 is as successful as #1.

I appreciate that, John, and I don't want to get into a flame war either. I know that book #2 will be nowhere near as successful as book #1, because a lot of people will just move on from SONAR, and the set of tips was already made available and according to scook, you can still find the unedited versions. I am adding value by including additional material, including tips on project transfers. But, I dunno...I'm really sad about losing Cakewalk. The second book will be closing the door. I kind of have to do it for my own closure.

Actually Craig - I hope Steinberg hires you, pays you a lot of money and hires some of the Cakewalk engineers as well with good pay.

Then I hope I can understand Cubase better.

Having said that, I support all your publications and I have very old articles by you stored away.

Yes, Craig.  You should do it.  I loved the first one, but the lack of "go-to" indexing in a PDF makes an annoying format even more annoying.  I'd purchase the first one in a printed edition at double the price in a heartbeat, because: (1) I'm old and not having to jockey windows is faster for me, (2) highlighting with a marker in a printed book is a whole lot easier than highlighting a PDF document, (3) printing the whole book is a PITA, and (4) having the text at my (literal) fingertips just seems to be an easier way to work with instructional texts.

what do you mean by this? pdf has multiple indexing options available, maybe they just weren't used (it's up  to the author, obv)

I am curious how often you work for free. Personally I like to be paid for work. All the derogatory comments about charging a fair sum (as evidenced by the people who are clearly ready to actually BUY the product in question, not by those who are just snarking and are obviously not intending to) are strange. As (aspiring?) musicians who are used to seeing the value of our product eroding away to the point where it is difficult to even give it away, I would have expected this group to be more understanding. Strange world. People think nothing about spending $10 for a cup of coffee but god forbid they pay for an e-book comprised of someone's hard-won knowledge, and the effort expended to compile it and put it out.

This thread seemed to get derailed a bit by some of the comments above.. Lets bring it back on track.

I bought the first "The Big Book of SONAR Tips" a while back and recently bought "Equalization De-Mystified" through reverb.com, so I will certainly buy a second tips book.

I have no intention of giving up on Sonar. I use the program as a hobbyist rather than professionally, so it does everything I need it to do and a whole lot I either don't know about or have no idea how to do, so the more books on Sonar the merrier!

Cheers,
Steve

Look folks, Craig and I have had an offline discussion and I was off-base due to some skewed assumptions. I did not intend to put anyone off of buying his book. Things have been tense since Gibson took a dump on us and I let that creep into my post. I forgot that Craig wasn't mr. Gibson, just another victim.

Craig, I believe, unless you owe it to yourself, you certainly don't have to do it. But it would be sweet if you could put together another book of tips for the ever wonderful and now legitimately legendary program for those of us who still love and use it.
