I just it wasn't so much hassle to road test other products!

Especially when it comes to iLok. iLok had an ok idea, but it went very wrong in so many ways.

He he funny thing this software world. At work we had to ditch the latest Nuendo because it kept screwing up - and I mean screwing up big time! So we're back on Nuendo 5.5 which doesn't mess things up as much, although, it does try very hard sometimes. Some days are worse than others but I do miss Nuendo 3 on a nearly daily basis! On my own DAW, where I do about 40% of my business + music + composing for hire, I never have a problem. Just to be clear, I do notice some weirdness in Sonar and it isn't perfect - yet - but at least it's reliable for me. It doesn't suddenly stop playing sound for example. Ableton Live crashes more on my DAW than Sonar does. On my Laptop, neither software ever crashed unless the hardware overheated on stage. On my shiny new MacBook, Ableton also flies but as we know, Sonar won't work on that. Either way, something is always fishy in the Software world and as infuriating as it can be, loosing ones temper rarely seem to work.

But Sharke, I'm sorry to hear about your troubles but I'm glad to see you're making progress here. I too have had my fair share of problems with Waves but as soon as I figured out the install routine, all the VSTs work really well. However, if I'm having a crash, which is rare, it seem to be related to a Waves plug and in particular the Kramer Master Tape. I can't offer a solution because I usually just cross my fingers and restart. But sometimes when my DAW gets really glitchy I take some time and re-install the whole thing and carefully rebuild the system, which seems to remedy most things. It's a bit of a pain in the arse but I usually get it done during a work day and I usually do this 2-3 times a year now as a maintenance activity.

I hope you get the rest of your crinkles ironed out, and who knows, if you get a new build, maybe everything comes together again ?

Best of luck!

If it makes anyone feel better, I've got a copy of Cubase on my computer. I tried "jumping ship" a while back & learned they're no better. Not only that, it's a bass ackwards application. Doesn't follow the common sense layout of Sonar.

I don't use Sonar now either. I've got a very spartan setup, using a hardware sequencer/sampler, a harddisk multitrack recorder & Kontakt loaded on a laptop. I just had to step away from the computer DAW world for a little bit to figure some things out; get away from the constant "need" to upgrade & workarounds.

They don't build HD recorders like they used to, I'm either going to have to buy something used or get back into computer DAWs. So I've been visiting a few forums. One thing I know for sure, if I decide on a computer DAW, I'm just going to buy the most recent copy & make it work. I'll do the maintenance updates, but that's it.

I've got a friend who works exclusively in PT7.4LE.... he's very happy & only recently started talking about upgrading to PT8HD (since the cost of the hardware is crashing).

I said all that to say, I already crossed Cubase off my list.

Hehehe....  I still have PTLE 7.4 on my Vista partition.       As an X2 and S1 2.5 user the PTLE UI feels very outdated and of course it has its share of limitations.  But I suppose if I hadn't been using anything else it would probably be fine.    Not that I even want to imagine...

Good luck with your own DAW search.

Sharke I'm sorry to hear about your problems. Issues with compatibility are always frustrating.
I wanted to let you know that we have a great relationship with Waves and have been working very closely with them over the past months.

Many issues with plugins are not what they may seem on the surface so be careful about jumping to conclusions that the primary fault lies in the DAW without analysis. A subtle change in behavior in a plugin can cause very drastic results from one DAW to another. A good example is supertap - this is actually a quirk in the plugin implementation that causes a feedback loop of parameter changes. This is why simply rolling the transport when a parameter is armed causes automation to start writing. I managed to address this by putting in  parameter feedback detection logic. The general sluggish UI issue with Waves plugins has also been resolved by reworking some of the core logic dealing with parameter notifications in SONAR.

I have not seen a case with complete loss of parameter state with Waves plugins. If you have a project that exhibits this you should definitely bug this up both with Waves and Cakewalk. If you have already done so please list the CWBRN number here. I have however seen the loss of parameter state with Guitar Rig - not in X2 though but when I was working on some stuff in X3. Based on what I saw I'm pretty sure that this is actually a GR bug. If the plugin is started before we load its persistence for some reason when audio streaming starts the plugin will reset itself! I was able to work around this in what I was doing. If you are seeing this in X2 there is probably some special situation where this same condition occurs in the project. If you do have the project file that exhibits this please send it to me and I can take a look at the specific case.

Anyway regarding the alleged lack of communication from Cakewalk its not due to some conspiracy to not communicate with users. Keep in mind that we have very few people that are public facing these days. Its a hard decision that many companies have to make to be profitable in these crazy economic times. Brandon Robin and Seth were(are) great guys and their role allowed them to interact more with users here. Its hard for us in other departments to get actively involved here but we try.
