  • Kontakt & Sonar X2: Multiple outputs? (p.2)

yeah, make sure you load Kontakt 16 as the VSTi, then under config in the mixer in Kontakt you set each output to a different track. I use Steven Slate drums in Kontakt player, there's more than 16 (8 stereo) outputs so I end up with more than one cymbal on the same output, but ho-hum. Once you've set it all up, MAKE SURE YOU SAVE IT IN KONTAKT! For example, i set up 'Thick Metal Kit' in SSD and renamed it 'Thickmetalkitmultiout'....

Multiple outs for drums in Battery is WAY easier than doing the same in Kontakt, which badly needs an update in that respect. However in Kontakt it's just a matter of creating the appropriate number of stereo/mono outputs and then routing each drum to them from the Studio Drummer mixer. The whole interface system is a pain in the ass though. I think that once you've set up the Kontakt outputs though you can save them as default?

Sweet! You guys are awesome. I'm itching to get back into my studio tonight to try this all out...

Please please please give it a try with Battery 3 - I have been a Komplete user since Komplete 3, and I can ASSURE you that Battery 3 is WAY easier to do all of this for drums.

I DO set up multiple audio output routing assignments for Kontakt, but only for traditional instruments or for samples I created, (I did the clock sequence from scratch for Floyd's Time, and also built the cash register openings/closings for Money - also from scratch, and triggered them from Kontakt).

Anyways, we are here for you if you have any questions,

I will definitely mess with that too tonight, Bob.

Hi baudze,
Glad to have helped. I agree you should have a look at Battery, but unfortunately most of what I regard as the better acoustic kits (Abbey Road and whatnot) are for Kontakt only. For the Kontakt drum kits I set up the multi-out routing once and just save it as a track template.
Oh, and regarding Kontakt 16, keep in mind that the standard Kontakt VST (the one that doesn't list a number of outputs) has up to 64 outs, so if you run out of outputs with the Kontakt 16 plug, just use the standard. FWIW, I generally just find myself using that one anyway.

In fact baudze, I think track templates are portable, so if you'd like I could probably throw one of mine up a bit later for you to download.

I'd really appreciate that if you could, Dean. Thanks ahead.

Granted that I've only opened Battery up a handful of times, I do agree that the kits in Kontakt (from Studio Drummer to the Abbey Road series) all sound head and shoulders above most kits I've heard in all other VSTs. In fact, I've spent the last 3 months remixing tracks I've recorded over the last 6 years just to take advantage of these kits, hence my questions about mixdown now that I'm at that stage. The samples are simply amazing, and when combined with Kontakt's "randomization" feature, I could almost swear some of my drum tracks sound like they were played by a professional drummer!

ah sorry, the Kontakt 16 must be to do with Kontakt player...another reason to get the full thing!

Hi baudze,
I checked and I actually already have one up:

I don't remember what it looks like right now and I'm not in the studio to check, but it's probably viable. Let me know how it works out and I'll put another one up if you need it.
