I'm trying to find a good sound effects vst with samples of cats, birds and other animals, weather splashes, rumbles and crashes, cartoon boings and doings, game show "winner" and "loser" dings and buzzers, etc. Would anybody know of a really good one, either free or paid, that would work well with Sonar X2?
 
Also, I'm having a nostalgia attack for my old hardware Roland Sound Canvas 55. I think that Roland manufactured up to at least model 88, and that there was a virtual one. Does anyone know if there's anything still available as a virtual instrument and, if so, where to get it and whether it would be worth the trouble? I'm on Windows 7, 64-bit, and as mentioned, I run Sonar X2.

I've still got a working SC-55 in my gear rack ~
and IMHO, it's still got some pretty good sounds for a box that's over 20 years old!!

Now, thanks to Randy's heads-up, I've looked up SoundFont and I see I can download a SoundFont player for free from the Cakewalk store and use it as a VST. Then I hope to follow his link and have my old SC-55 sounds :). Just what I was hoping for, and I'll do that first thing tomorrow.
 
Still hoping somebody has a suggestion for a great sound effects library (?)

There are a lot of free sound effects on the web.
 
Here are two sites with I found using google as an example. I can't vouch for the quality but there are plenty more sites.

These will just be WAV files. If you want to trigger them as a VSTi than look at http://www.tx16wx.com/.  Its a very useful free sofware sampler. It will also play any Soundfont of SFZ files with considerably more features that the SFZ+ free player available from Cakewalk.

You can find quite a few usable sound effects (many freely licensed for any use) at http://www.freesound.org/
 
It may provide some kind of convenience to you to be able to trigger the sounds from a VST (I assume you mean a sampler or rompler app) as part of your work flow or if you need to play them live, but you can just paste wave files into the track without using any plugin and get the same result.

Thanks for the link and the tip, slartabartfast. That's a good point about just pasting the wave files into the track. I guess I was hoping to have a good library of sound effects at hand offline, all in one organized-logically-by-somebody-else package on my hard drive. I don't want to go online from the computer I have Sonar on, so that would make less running back and forth between rooms and computers.
 
Also, although I try hard, organization is definitely not my top skill, so I'd rather have a package that's all pre-arranged into logical and tidy categories, and is glaringly obvious for even me to find right there as a VST in Sonar whenever needed
