• SONAR
  • JAVA ISSUE? SOLVED (was start up issue)

Hey all,

I have one project that overdrives the CPU, pops and cracks loud, but only maybe half the time I open it up and for no apparent reason.  Other Projects still work fine.

I also have this issue with Java which causes Norton antivirus to alert about an update each time I open the computer, and even though I have carefully loaded the latest version of Java, Java keeps prompting for an update each time I start the computer up.

This time I started the computer, opened x2, started the project that sometimes crashes, project was crashing and pops and cracks with CPU over-driven, and noticed that Java was again doing it's annoying prompts for and update.  I Clicked off the Norton alert, cancelled the Java prompt and presto!  No more crash.

I'm not sure I have truly found the problem because ONLY ONE of my project does this peculiar behavior, and I have not tried this start up sequence and repeated the procedure again yet to test it.

Just wondering if anyone else has this problem with Java and if you think it may be somehow interfering with ONLY one of my projects?  Or do you suspect something else is amiss?

Thanks,  Ron

I doubt java is causing problems with your SONAR project. Norton might be affecting SONAR though.

As far as java tripping Norton, when installed, java loads a program that automatically checks for updates called jusched.exe. You can turn off jusched or alter the frequency of the checks via the java control panel Updarte tab. Deselecting "Check for Updates Automatically" will kill the jusched process. The Advanced button the the right of that check box opens a dialog to alter the check frequency and time.

asaik, unless you're on an enterprise server or other corporate setting, you don't need java. you do need javascript. my sonar pc does not have java. i would uninstall it.

as for norton, i believe it is one of the worst .. let's just say you would be better served by avast free, it doesn't interfere... uninstall norton and install avast.

my best advice...

Skook ,(Agreed that project problem looks unrelated to java.)

Dlion16, I unfortunately don't have a dedicated sonar pc, so the whole family uses it and I have a program that does use java.

Is avast as effective an anti virus?   Norton does seem to get bad press here.

The antivirus supplied with Windows is a decent alternative too.

At one time Norton was notorious for being a resource hog. But for the last year or two they have come a long way and are considered one of the best out there as far as virus protection.

Which virus protection software is the best, paid for or free? It's up for debate all over the internet. Here's an article you might find useful:

When you are about to do some Sonar work you could disable Java in your startup programs. You might even be able to create a user account on the computer that does this automatically but I'm not sure.

If the machine is being used for heavy internet use yes Avast is probably the best. Be sure to take a good hard look at the Avast settings though because there is some stuff in there that likes to call home and you'll want to disable Avast sounds (unless you like having a creepy chick's voice yammering at you ever couple hours). Microsoft Security Essentials though is quite good as well and lighter than Avast.

CPU usage seems fine with Norton on.  I doubt Norton is causing the crash deal in only one program. I did find and change update calender to Sundays only for all programs.

At the very least, before you use Sonar, you can go to the msconfig utility and turn off all start up programs, restart your PC, then make some music. After you finished and want to let the rest of the family back on the PC go back and put all the startup programs back on, restart and it's all done.

Even your AV definition updates? You might want leave that turned on to automatic and just turn it off before a session (remember to turn it back on though). Once a week isn't enough for that kind of thing but it can interfere with system resources.
You just don't want a new virus to slip through between updates. Program and OS updates once a week are fine though.
