  • Anyone Familiar with Kontakt 5 Drums in X2?

Hello--

I feel like a noob again since upgrading to X2, but I'm trying to do something I haven't done before--in any version of Sonar. I'm trying to assign the different drum parts in kontakt to different channels in X2.

I've watched a couple of videos on setting up kontakt channels, but when it gets to the routing to the different outputs in X2, something isn't working.

Steps I've taken:

  • I insert the kontakt 5 (k5) player as 8 outputs in X2.
  • I add more outputs in k5 - I only want the kick and the snare to have independent outputs--all the other drums parts can go to the master.
  • On the kick and then the snare I assign them to one of the new mono outputs I created in k5 (the rest I leave on master)
  • In X2 I have three busses for the drums. One is for the kick, one is for the snare, and one is for all the other drums, called, drums.
  • On each MIDI output in X2 I route the output to the respective bus...
  • ...each bus goes to the master fader, etc.

When I play the take, the level meters in k5 seem to represent I've routed k5 correctly, but in X2 all of the drums parts are playing in only one of the output "tracks" and not going to their assigned busses.

Any help is very much appreciated!!

That was exactly my question yesterday. All the answers you'll ever need here in this thread:

Pay particular attention to this: http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?high=&m=2481347&mpage=1#2481353

This part I knew--but you had to hit the exclamation point icon at the top of kontakt to reboot it and show the newly added buses--FYI.
I'll check the other link you provided.

I created multi-out "templates" for all Abbey Road drum kits (60, 70, 80 and Modern).

PM if you want them.

OK--it looks like the only step that I'm doing differently is inserting kontakt with the option of 8 outputs instead of creating each one separately myself. I'm not sure this is exactly my same scenario since the drums in kontakt are all considered one instrument and the same MIDI channel, but I'll give it a try.

Thanks,

Btw you don't need to use a multiple output instance of Kontakt - that's for using multiple instruments in the same instance of Kontakt. The plain version lets you set up multiple outputs from the same instrument (which is what you want for drums).

I appreciate that. I'm trying again now.

*Update*

Fail. I seem to get the whole configuration in kontakt (at least I think I do) but the routing in X2 is failing.

I haven't read all the various threads/advice posted so far so I don't know if anyone has posted this video, but this is what taught me how to do it in Pro Tools. The most important part is when he shows you how to set up the output channels in Kontakt (the plug itself, not the drum library you're using). To get to the output dialog, there is a button at the top of Kontakt called "Output" - is this what you're using?
