  • Smart grid; Good idea - Bad execution

I've never use the smart grid function. It's a great idea, but it's poorly executed.

I don't know if this has been discussed before but, wouldn't it be nice if we were able to set a minimum and maximum snap value to the this function and also if we could change the curve of when the snap value changed to what zoom level (like a graphic curve) to make the setting better match the snap value we want at a specific zoom level?

..and also having individual settings available for piano roll view and track view, of course.

I'm not saying it can't be improved, but I'm able to be pretty fast with it for the work I do. I'm fast on that N hot key!

It's a cool idea I guess but I generally leave it turned off. I know what I want to Snap to and having it change all the time just screws me up.

I love it but I do have one finger on the N key a lot.
saves me from changing settings a lot

What does the N key do? I forget.

N just turns snap on and off

I always keep smart grid off as well, but I think I would use it if the settings were more flexible..
ex. if I want to jump in and out of PRV and want to have the notes snap to 16th notes in there and the clips snap to bars in track view, no matter the zoom level, this would be possible with this feature.

I'm very quick with the N as well, but I think a better smart grid would make the work flow better since I wouldn't have to change the snap value all the time..

it's not jumping between snap on/off that's the problem. it's the jumping between different snap values that I think could be improved

Ah right. I should have known that. I thought maybe it was the toggle between snap values thing. The Snap functions are pretty thorough in a lot of ways but there is quite a bit to remember. For most of what I do it's simple enough to just reach up and change things manually... I do have to remember the N key binding though because I do indeed turn Snap on and off quite frequently. One thing I find with the Smart Grid is the values are much smaller than I want. For example if I'm zoomed right in having it default to 16th or 32nd notes would be more useful. Not ticks or samples. Just makes it kind of useless to me.

Cheers.

A N key chord can also change between snap default settings. Alt+N maybe?

yeah and this is exactly what I'm talking about :)
If we were able to set a min and max value we could set it to never go below, for example, 16th notes

I also find it useless to have a snap function go all the way down to samples. Some may like this, but with the option to choose everyone could get what they want.. and more people would be able to take advantage of this (potential) great tool.

Ctl+shift n or hold n down to use secondary snap settings.
