Hi all,

Newbee here. For years, I've been using Sonar DAWs and have had no problems. Now all of a sudden, X2 Producer is randomly crashing. I'm doing nothing different than I have always done and my hardware is exactly the same. I've got Windows 8 and updated to the latest patch. I started noticing problems mixing down wav files and referencing them in the main project (not loading them into the project). I've always done this and have had no problems recognizing the latest mixdown. At some point, tracks in the main projects were not getting updated with the new wav file. I would have to delete events in the track and reimport by reference the new wav file. This worked for a while, then all of a sudden, the whole application began to randomly crash. I've done several installs and always end up with the same results. Again, none of the hardware or drivers have changed. Interestingly, I don't have any of these problems reverting back to X1! I hate to go backwards in DAWs, but if there is no fix, that's what I'll have to do. Does anybody know if others are having similar problems and if a fix is in the works?

Thanks,
Bruce

If it stared after you downloaded the latest Win 8 patch, this is most likely the cause of it. Or it may be a plugin or something else connected to your PC that doesn't like the Win 8 patch

Now, as far as your tracks not updating, this may be because your PIC CACHE is overloaded. Delete your pic cache, meaning delete the contents in the pic cache folder, not the folder itself.

Hi Cj,

Thanks for you quick reply! The problem exists with or without the patch. I deleted files from the pic cache, and it's still crashing. I'll try disabling some of the plugins.

Thanks,
Bruce

You can start Sonar in safe mode and disable all the plug ins. Then turn them on one by one and see what happens. If you're using 64 bit Sonar with 32 bit plugs, that may cause an issue. Ever since I stopped using 32 bit plugs, I stopped having crashes.

I started in safe mode and loaded all the plug-ins one at a time. The project loaded successfully. For a while the crashes were random, but now there is a pattern. The project will successfully load and I will do a mixdown to a single wav file without making any changes at all to the project. Then when I go to open the project again, it won't load. How could a simple mixdown corrupt the project?? This makes me believe that there's a bug in X2. Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Bruce

Are you running W8-64bit OS?...One thing you might take a look at is the W8 Event Log (in Control Panel)..Look through the various categories to see if the crash is being reported in the log. That might give you additional information on exactly what component is killing the application.  If you are not sure what your are looking at in the log...clear all the events in all the categories (select a category right click and select clear) then go back and force the crash..if there's anything getting generated by the application, it will show up as new events (probably in the Application category).

If you need to contact support, this will be valuable information to resolving the issue. Don't assume anything, the problem could be associated with the application (core, plug-ins, etc) or the W8 OS...The log will be helpful! You might want to check with Support to see if a crash files are being created by Sonar and stored somewhere in the Sonar install directory structure.

I just had to reload my OS (W7-64bit)  due to a hard drive crash and just got "up and running"...Very stable at this point but I've never seen the problem you are having...

Thanks guys for all your help. I ended up rebuilding the main project from scratch and moved a lot of plugins from it to the mixdown projects and everything is working fine now. I guess it was too much processing for X2. I don't think my hardware was the issue, because the CPU never went above 30% and memory never went above 2GB (I have 32GB) and my soundcard has never been an issue in the past. It's a bit inconvenient, because I really like to apply track effects in the main project. It's too bad X2 doesn't have a dynamic feature that recognizes bottlenecks and automatically makes adjustments. Though I have an M.S. in Computer Science, I certainly don't want to spend the rest of my life bogged down in latency, buffer sizes, ad infinitum. My programming days are behind me. I just want to enjoy software at the user level!

Thanks again,
Bruce

Just to be clear, these are crashes and not dropouts, right? The application is actually closing on you? Are you using touch? What kind of interface? I use an updated version of Window eight and I can't crash mine right now.

My X2 on Win 7 x64 has also been crashing more frequently lately.  BitBridge is always a problem, and was the source of many crashes, so I've been trying to get rid of ALL 32-bit plug-ins in projects so BitBridge won't load.

Other crashes are still happening, and I have a support ticket open.  Maybe a recent Windows update caused some problems across Win 7 and 8...who knows.  But I hope to get to the bottom of it.  Good luck to you too!

Was instructed to completely uninstall and reinstall X2, complete with manual registry changes.  Not looking forward to this, but I do hope it resolves my issues.

One of the crash reports I sent them references a dll related to the ProChannel, which is why they recommended a full re-install.  When you do have a crash, if the crash details are not displayed, be sure to get the details from Windows Event log (Application section).  It helps find what is bugging out, at least for a particular crash event.
