I've searched here and in the manual and I haven't found an answer to this probably stupid question but...how do you Midi control a parameter on a plugin that's in the FX Bin of an Audio Track?  Specifically I want to use the Volume Pedal on my Axiom to control a Wah Pedal stomp box in Amplitube 3.  This is easily accomplished in other DAWs so I'm sure it's just something I'm missing or some functional concept that I'm not getting.  Thanks in advance for any help.

You have to change how the plugin is used in Sonar.

I am running on mental fumes this morning, so if I whiff on this, someone please kindly correct my info for the poster - and thanks.

You want to tell reconfigure the plugin properties so that Sonar uses it as a SYNTH, rather than an AUDIO plugin.  To do this:

1.  Remove the plugin from your track.
1.  Go to Utilities>Cakewalk Plugin Manager.
2.  Once there, find the audio plugin you want to change, highlight it, then click (under VST  Configuration) on Plug-in Properties.  This will open up the VST Plug-in Properties dialog box.
3.  You will see a check box for 'Configure as synth'.  Check the box for that and click OK.  I believe you may have to rescan your plugins, as well, to pick up the change you just made.

Once the above is done, you should be able to re-insert the plugin, but this time, you want to insert it as a SOFT SYNTH, rather than an audio plugin.

I am out of time for the moment - my 16-year old 6'8" son got invited to practice with the Georgetown University varsity team this morning, so I have to leave to go do that with him.   I am hoping someone else can finish assisting you.

The part that is remaining to explain is on how to set things up to control the synth-configured plugin to respond to the controller data from your pedal.

Once configured as a synth, it is also possible to drag the plug-in (now in the synth browser) to the FX bin. Once in the FX bin. Add a MIDI track with input from your controller and output to the plug-in. Configure the plug-in to respond to the MIDI data how you wish.

Thanks a million guys that works but.......am I the only one who thinks that converting effects to synths is.....clumsy let's say ? It seems counter intuitive to have effects show up in the synth list and of course that screws up any previously created custom Plugin Layouts. Certainly just allowing all effects to receive midi would be better ?

So I thought I'll just convert the FX Bin to an FX Chain, load a knob, assign that to the parameter I want to control then midi learn it to my controller but that doesn't seem to work either.  The FX Chain does not show up as an option in the output of a midi track and an effect configured as a synth can't be converted to an FX Chain......

So I guess the next question would be how do you get midi to an FX Chain ? Learn is there as an option so I assume it's possible ?  Thanks again for any help.

I do not believe that FX chains have MIDI learn capability. From the help page :

Note: You can also "learn" plug-in parameters by simply touching controls in plug-in property pages. To do so, right-click in the FX Chain module’s Controls page and select Learn Knobs or Learn Buttons on the pop-up menu. Touch the plug-in parameters you want to assign, then select Learn Knobs or Learn Buttons again to exit learn mode.

Well that's a shame and quite frankly a bit of a surprise.  So no way to control an effect's parameters with a midi controller when it's in an FX Chain ?  Apparently the only solution is to have an effect configured as a synth which then makes it impossible to use in an FX chain. Again it all feels somewhat clumsy especially for a DAW as mature as X2.

Oh well such is life...Thanks again for your help.

Why not submit it as a feature request?  It seems like reasonable functionality.

I'm trying that now.  I came back to edit my post above to say woa woa wait a minute:

Active Controller Technology (ACT) allows you to control whatever plug-in effect or soft synth

Yes I'm giving it a go on my other computer now. I'll let you know how it works.  I thought there had to be something other than "configure as synth"......

I had already configured ACT for Sonar's Transport Buttons so it shouldn't be hard to figure out effect plugins control........

EDIT: Holy crap that was easy..........assigned my pedal to the Wah in Amplitube 3 in just a couple of minutes. Thanks Chuck for the correct information.

I've deleted my post above since it was related to the "configure as synth" stuff.......
