Just throwing this out but it would be possible for CW to continue selling Sonar. They may need to load it with disclaimers that the rolling updates are no more and, perhaps, no support except for the forums.

I know they couldn't do the monthly subscriptions but there may be some that will buy the 'full' versions. Maybe knock some bucks off. It could generate some revenue while in the death throws.

This is what Sony did to Acid. They had quit developing it and continued to sell it. About once a year I would get an email where they knocked another $40 off or something. It would still likely be up for sale if SonyCreative weren't bought out.

Just a thought...

Cakewalk can do whatever Gibson allows them to do. The Cakewalk store is closed.

They COULD continue to sell existing products but the decision to not sell seems pretty firm.
My guess is nobody is available to support sales when such support might be needed.  I'm also guessing that the third party payment providers did not want to support sales of inactive products.  Internet sales of corporate product by a legal entity like a corporation can require a lot of background activity.  It's not impossible but selling does require additional resources that Gibson chose not to provide.

If you sale a product, you have to give support and warranty.
The only way is to give it away as freeware.
We don't know what Gibson does with the code - and we don't know what Gibson really owns.

Totally agree. They can sell it as it is for many years. Like other discontinued VST plugins. Like tons of games in Steam. I have Cakewalk Music Creator 6 from 2011, it has no online updates or patches, and still works fine. Windows as a software platform has good backward compatibility with old software. Digital sales are mostly automated nowadays, and even if they need some work, it will be payed by revenue.

Exactly, there are tons of old and abandoned software and media selling on steam, and many original studios/devs don't even exist any more and people can still buy them on steam, origin, gog and other platforms.

People are still buying tons of old/abandoned software without real "support and warranty". With the Only warranty that you have 2 hours to refund it if you do not like it and if you are lucky. Hilarious! Steam can do that with cakewalk's stuff too.

Good point. I had forgotten about Good Old Games. They live off long abandoned programs.  Plus, there is no reason that CW can't continue to sell the plugins, VSTI's and libraries for DimPro and Rapture or whatever.

As it is known Cakewalk has been costing Gibson, Gibson has been costing Gibson LOL
it stands as conjecture that shutting Cakewalk might be only a temporary measure to end the financial severed artery of contractural / legal obligations to the company known as  Cakewalk.
Meanwhile a team is gathered to present the products under a new banner to the benefit of current Cakewalk product owners and supporters and a massive marketing and promotion campaign to make it known bundled with hardware, controllers and interfaces under Tascam for the Consumer/Prosumer market.
Sonar's new name will be Tascam/Teac and revive their origins in the recording Industry.
I should get a job at Gibson LOL
Remain Calm

Craig A wrote somewhere on the forum that similar things were suggested before the plug was pulled and (Henry) or Gibson wasn’t interested.
