Anyone know how to turn on the menu bar in Guitar Rig 5, mine isn't displayed and I can't find anything about turning it on in the manual.

Could you be more specific. Are you asking about the Windows menu bar in the standalone version, the VST menu in SONAR, what Guitar Rig calls "SideKick" (the pane with the Preset, Component, Browser buttons) or something else.

Yes, File, Edit, View, Help - does not appear in plug-in mode.
 
I suppose I could use the standalone version to change settings but it's a little odd.

It is not part of the VST plug-in, it is a windows menu so it is only on the standalone version.
There is nothing on the windows menu that is not available in the VST except for standalone specific stuff.
For example, the Preferences selection in the windows menu invokes the Options button in the SideKick.
What settings are you needing to change that are not accessible in the the VST?

Those settings are controlled by the host software. The DAW preference settings and the track settings handle those for the plug-in. Which Audio/MIDI setting are you trying to alter?
