  • Take Lanes Display Question

Before getting on with my question, I have to point out that this is my first big project in X2.  I was very comfortable and fast with layers and was nervous about take lanes from the reading I had done in this forum.  I have to say that after my first major tracking session and now a fair way into editing, I am finding take lanes to be a considerable improvement over layers.  Not that I think they're perfect, and I do miss some kind of 'rebuild' and 'remove empty' function, but an improvement nonetheless.

Now the question:
When there are multiple clips on different lanes, but in the same time frame, is there a way to specify or force which clip will be shown when the lanes are collapsed?  I have 2 tracks that are different mics on the same instrument.  They are edited identically down to the sample level, and in this one spot, one track shows the clip that's in the playback, and the other shows a clip that's muted, but that I'm not ready to dump yet.  I'd like for them both to show the clip that's being played back rather than a muted clip on top with a playing one lurking underneath it.

Absence of rebuild function makes whole take lanes concept unusable...

Let's hope for improvements in X3.

+1 to all of this ^^^^^^^

After having tried to like Track Lanes, the lack of a "Rebuild Lanes" feature, and a single command to "Remove Empty Lanes" slows me down to such an extent that I now do my comping using Layers in X1 before going back to X2 to mix. So much for progress

I fully appreciate that a lot of folks prefer Take Lanes, but I'm guessing that even those who do like them would like to see the 'Remove Empty' and 'Rebuild' functions re-implemented.

I would like to see a rebuild function implemented, but one that was not as chaotic as the old layers version.

On the whole I much prefer the take lanes to layers, but they could certainly do with a little tweaking.

Yeah... like rebuild in order, with each track's multiple clips staying on the correct track. Not every clip going randomly anywhere, as in the old layers method.

And it's just overwhelmingly ridiculous to not realize that if you solo a lane and collapse them... the soloed lane should be what appears in the main track. How no one didn't think of this is beyond me. I guess they were so giddy about just having take lanes. Or at least a way to order them by preference so the top lane is the one displaying when the track is collapsed.

There also needs to be a way to highlight or solo the clip in any given lane that you want to use for the track, and that's the audio that shows up in the main track once it's collapsed. Having the audio that's playing being visually buried among all the takes is... well I already said it... ridiculous.

And, something like Pro Tools playlists... where you could specify multiple different sections of each lane and store them as playlists... so you could try out editing different sections together and have them recalled later... would also be welcome.

Yeah... right now, the take lanes are just "a way to do it"... but not a very good way.

Regarding layers in X1, it may be worth pointing out that the rebuild command does not order them randomly.  It moves the clip to the top that starts the soonest. If you have two clips that start at the same time, it puts the one on top that is the longest duration.

Once I realized that, layers became much better for me.  When needed, I could specify the order of clips by making small slip edits to the beginnings of the clips.

Again, though, I want to point out that - despite losing those two features - I like lanes better.

Peace,
Seth
