  • Template OR Track Templates - what do you use? (p.2)

I use Track Templates a lot for guitar setups.  Different effects, EQ settings, sometimes Amplitube CS etc......

Just out of curiosity: can Track Templates be backed up easily? For whenever you get a new computer? I am ALMOST ready to buy X2 so I can't check this myself. (I could check if this is possible with Sonar 8.5 but maybe things work differently? I only know you can't save and backup the setup of the toolbar in S8.5 which sucks big time: luckily the toolbar in X2 is much more simpler with those modules instead of having to add or remove every possible button one by one as you have to do in 8.5...)

I only use one self-created project template with necessary tracks/buses and screensets for all projects for convenience. And I update it frequently as necessary. I also have exactly the same project template in another daw (well, not exactly the same because features differ).

The main advantage of a Track Template is that you can add it to a project at any stage.  I have some for Battery 3 drum setups that I have used a lot.  I have not used them lately, so I am not sure whether the ones that I created in Sonar 7 will still work correctly in X2.

Backing them up is simply a matter of making a copy of the relevant files.  Go into Global Settings to find out where they are currently stored.

Yes, that is what I am getting at

As I said in the OP I would previously have loaded a project template with everything ready to role - but I am finding this a bit "cluttered"

Loading the Track Templates as and when I need them appears to be a much "tidier" solution

Thanks for all the comments - it looks like the sensible way forward is a much simpler Project Template and then more detailed Track Templates for "as and when" required

I use a project template to set the basics and a track template for specifics.

I use track templates all the time.

That way I can start with an empty project, maybe play with some guitars and vocals, and then later with just one click I can load my drum kit template and it pops open record ready. I can track the drum kit as soon as my preamps and comps are warmed up.

I also use project templates... but I just use the projects. I don't bother saving them as templates. I just name a project "template" file Fred-n-Elvis_template.cwp or something like that. I like doing that because it's an easy way to be sure I know where the audio for that .cwp will end up.

best regards,
mike

You can make it look less cluttered if you hide unused tracks/buses and save the layout as a screenset (not that I'm against the use of track templates).

I put customization to SONAR like this into a single directory tree and link them to the appropriate places in SONAR. Backup could not be easier
