I'm comfortable the basics now but wondered about things like variety on the tails of notes. Even shortening them leaves a tail due to the original synth settings.
Can I make an occasional staccato note out of an existing one with a tail?
I understand I can just edit the release on the synth for all of them but I'm talking about a variety of release tails.

The note isn't going to control the release... only the initial triggering and duration. After the note ends, there will still be a release sound if that's the way the synth is programmed. You might be able to insert a controller value right after the note to control the synth release.

Your reply did get me thinking tho.
I could set up a second synth with different settings and mult out a track with just those notes moved into it.

Yep, that should work too. As far as controllers... SONAR has a Controller Pane in the PRV where you can insert MIDI controller values. What these values control depends on the synth, although there's a set of standard ones as well, such as volume, modulation, etc. If you have one of my Power books, there's an entire section on the Piano Roll with a large section on controllers as well.
 
You could also automate the synth parameter, but you would have to do that in the Track view and not the PRV.

I do have the Sonar Power X1 thanks, I did read the section on controllers and I see the controller panes in the PRV and I can open new ones.
I can open the MIDI event type to change the controller lane but have no clue as to what controls what or, more specifically what they mean. Lol
EG there are choices like Wheel, ChanAft, RPN and NRPN which are meaningless at my level.
Next to that are Values and channels options but I would have no clue what to do with them.
I'm thinking I need to step back and study Midi theory and terminology in general and that is so far down the priority list it's not likely to happen nor would it stick with me until I use it more than occasionally.

No problem. What you suggested earlier should work and you could also use automation like I mentioned in my last post. You're method of using two synth instances will be easier though and let you do all the work in the PRV.
