Strummy,

I am trying to figure out from your original post whether you prefer metric or whatever you call what we do over here.

Cheers,

Bert

Pretty cool, why we should do 'everyday' maths in base 12:

I prefer what we're used to really. As I mentioned, if the news mentions a 4000 metre mountain that means nothing to me, I have to work it out into feet to get an idea of how high it is (just over 13,000 feet).

Science! -> metric
Weight (froot 'n' veg) -> imperial (lbs & ozs)
Height (people) -> feet and inches
Height (buildings, giraffes) -> feet or yards
Speed (cars, Usain Bolt) -> mph
Area (e.g. internal, flooring etc.) -> sq. feet
Area (e.g. fields, counties) -> acres, sq. miles
Weight (whales, elephants, your mum) -> tons (imperial)
Weight (people) -> stones 'n' pounds
Weight (hashish, grass) -> ozs and fractions thereof
Volumes (any) -> metric (cubic cm, metres, kilometres)
Mars Climate Orbiter -> mixture of metric and imperial -> roflcrash!

We need to get you a ticket to Portland. The micro brews thing here is exceptional, and there are so many choices, that you can get dizzy deciding which one to try!

Are we talking ale? Cask conditioned?

Best post by Pedro evah!

By that I mean he's spot on.  We have more exceptional micro brews in the Portland Metro Area than France has wines.

And we're talking EVERYTHING!
...

I have a couple of friends from the old Pacifier days, that have been brewing things for many years, and they are both really good, and I do not pass up an opportunity to try them ... and I am not a drinker at all!

What the old Europe has lost in their wines, is their "individuality", and the great thing about Portland, is that these are all special in their own way, and there is no "commercialism" to ruin the quality of these products, and I think that this is the detail that makes them special.

I always thought that wine has lost its luster some 50 years ago. It had already been relying on vintages to show some spark, but in the end, the product itself just was not that great. And you would be hard pressed to say that about these brews all over Portland. It's an issue just deciding where you wanna go each night!

I much prefer craft English Pale Ales, because I reckon the standard of vodka in Russia has declined since I was never there, ever.

I do, and also Old Crafty Hen which is a darker ale, about 6.5%, lovely drop.
