At first glance it seems he's likely doing what I used to in X1. Never had a problem with it. Just when I switched to X2. I'm probably gonna try to get my head around the new mute tool way of comping anyway. Just a weird thing though like once there was any overlap of the takes the sound got washed out but was fine in their own tracks.
