  • How can perform 303-like slide to note (tremolo between two notes) in X2 score editor?

Hello,

I would like to perform 303-like slide to note (tremolo between two notes) sound, how can I do it with Sonar X2 score editor? I mean not just write a text note, but also perform it by a mono synth. And is it possible to do the same with the piano roll (like the "Set note ends to start of next note" command in Reaper)?

Thank you

Not sure what a "303-like" slide means...

Possibly you could do what I think this is with the modwheel control. Or if you're talking about a glide between notes, that's called portamento. Some synths have a portamento control and others don't so it depends on the synth you're using.

Select a synth engine that has a portamento function.

Hi thanks for answer. Yes, you are right, I want to do portamento.

Here is the example:

Select a synth engine that has a portamento function.

I have selected the synth engine with portamento sound preset (reFX PlastiCZ or DiscoDSP Corona).

But to perform the portamento with that synths the following note has to be triggered before the previous note ends. So I have the question if I should do it manually using piano roll or notation editor (but I can not imagine how to do that using notation editor). Or if I could do it with the portamento symbol like this:

And I definitely prefer the latter method (portamento symbol in staff editor).

I came back to see if someone had an answer for you... I don't... it's over my head.

If I recall how I have done it in the past, the synth just does a portamento effect in between notes... no over lap is required.

I now realize that this isn't what you are asking about. I'm curious to learn about the solution.

Good luck.

best regards,
mike

I may be missing something. The video clip does not have any portamento. What it does have is an envelope controlled filter sweep with some resonance. Are you talking about the "squeak" sound that becomes more prominent while the sequence is playing and the guy messes with the filter cutoff?

Hi, here it is more clear:

And here is the Wikipedia citation:
"The TB-303 sequencer has some unique features that contribute to its characteristic sound. During the programming of a sequence, the user can determine whether a note should be accented, and whether it should employ portamento, a smooth transition to the following note. The portamento circuitry employs a fixed slide time, meaning that whatever the interval between notes, the time taken to reach the correct pitch is always the same."

I think that it is not so easy with the notation (staff) editor, because it looks like, that there are a different implementation. I think that dedicated Notation SW use something like expression commands, but VSTi synths use mostly overlapped notes. So I think it is not so easy to make it general.

Thanks, this is the great tutorial. I can do it with overlapped notes in piano roll editor, but is it generally possible using the staff notation and portamento symbol in Sonar X2 or somewhere else? Or maybe with step pattern?

have you attempted doing it in d16's synth ?
