Hi,

I'd prefer to use VST instead of DirectX plugins. What are the lightweight alternatives to the Sonitus plugins, like dealy and reverb and sidechain compression?

Check out the Blue Cat plugins that can be found here: http://www.bluecataudio.com/Products/Bundle_FreewarePack/.  You don't say which version of Sonar that you use, but the Nomad Factory plugs in Platinum are terrific.  Also, Melda products makes good freebies.

You won't find everything you need there, but Melda's MFreeEffectsBundle has some great "basic" plugins in it, I use many of them regularly despite having access to many other paid-for alternatives. Pity there's no delay though.

Valhalla DSP has both verbs, delays and more... killer quality, super cheap, light on cpu... one man army of genius creations...

FabFilter is uber quality, light on resources, but pricey...

Here is a recent thread about tempo delay options http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3442789
Including Sonitus there are at least 7 plug-ins in SONAR Platinum which are capable of tempo delay. There are a few more delay plug-ins which do not have tempo sync. Most of the plug-ins are not DirectX.
