That said, if I'm no longer happy, I walk and use something else. But I'm willing to see what X whatever it is, has to offer to me before I make any decisions. :)

I've been waiting for too many years.  The last solid release was 8.5 and the last staff view improvements were...maybe 10 years ago.   I'm actually amazed at the Cubase 7 demo so far.

I've pretty much decided on Cubase.  I've got a about 3 weeks left on the demo.   I dread learning a new DAW but I really have to.

I think you will like Cubase, it is feature rich and very powerful. It is a royal pain to become as conversant with a new DAW as you are with your present one though. Not impossible though.

Very true.  I've avoided it for a long time.  I'm making good progress with the demo.  It's mostly a matter of a) learning where everything is and b) learning what everything is called.

Since X1 was released I've spent considerable time on learning PT 9 HD as well as Presonus Studio One 2.
Previously other programs were available for compatability now they are as much a part of my overall workflow as Sonar was exclusive until 8.5.
Having an emitional connection to software and people I only know superficially would be a big mistake

I'm not really sure what the OP is really asking here.  So many people have other DAWS because they're inexpensive compared to what most musicians shell out for... well you name it.  I don't have any problems with X2a that make me cringe.

Right now I think I'll probably skip a couple of upgrade cycles.   $99 these days is about a third of some of the best software out there.

I've already ordered Cubase 7. I'm going to keep my eyes on what happens next with X2 however. X1 and X2 have made great strides in providing a more modern interface but at the expense of stability and customisability. No bug fixes for 6 months is not good enough. I think Cakewalk have lost the plot over the past 2-3 years.

As an aside. The fact no one has bothered making this forum work with Firefox says everything.....

If they insist it's Windows8 and touch screen I will not be moving.  I also want full color back, plus the Mackie controller dll updated. A slim down screen  version as the console takes up too much space.
I don't like touch screen anyway not possible to reach across my desk to get  to it and I don't want a screen in my face all the time.
No study shows the side effects of using touch screens unless for ipads which usually sits on your lap.
