You know I enjoy your tunes.... this is no exception...  so as the song was ending, I went downstairs for a few minutes and came back up to hear Interstate Sun..... that is one of my favorite DP songs of all time....and they have a lot of really, really good stuff..... your cover is impeccable. As good or better (dare I say that?) than the band itself.

I saw DP one time.... after Blackmore left. Bolan was on guitar that evening.

HEHEH, INTERSTATE SUN...

that was the very first thing i ever recorded into Sonar.

that was fun!

this is what ritchie did when he heard this version:

quote[thanks for the "X", peter.]quote
(They've changed how this board used to work and I can't figure out how to do things like quotes anymore.)

LOL. I edited the post.

In the first paragraph I complimented your talent.

In the next paragraph I asked a question about the production and did not receive a response after several days even though you had left responses for folks who posted after my post, so I assumed you may have misinterpreted my compliment as an off-handed remark because my written words don't always translate well. Therefore I deleted the whole post but it wouldn't let me close out the window with an empty post so I just typed an "x" so there would be something in the post.

All is well. You did a good job!

ha,
sorry peter,
it was nothing intended, just one of those missed cyber thingys,
but thanks for listening for sure...

the tech questions...
i missed it, i was just not back on the board for a couple of days or so,

i like the tech questions,
if you want to ask again, please do....
i'll answer any question.

i can say this:
as far as actually capturing the performances i do,
it's as NON technical as it can get!

sitting on a stool,
with a medium condenser mic, pointed near the base of the neck,
i run into a tube mic pre (a cheapy) and into a DBX compressor (another cheapy) and into a MAudio Audiophile 192 sound card breakout cable, into Sonar.

once in sonar,
i usually will roll off the low end at about 140hz,
and tweak the high end for sparkle, but get rid of anything strident.

i may put a gentle plugin compressor across the ACOUSTIC GUITARS buss, usually about a 2:1 ratio,
gentle attack and release, and that's it.

i'll hard pan a couple of tracks left and right, and then bring in other ones more towards the center,
typically 35% left and right, and solo tracks go straight up....

a bit of room reverb across the busses,
very straightforward mixes.
i automate volume envelopes very heavily on ALL tracks,
limiter on bass,
i prefer delay on  voices over reverb, but will still use a bit of reverb sometimes IF i want the vox to sit in the same area as the guitars.

guitars are Taylor 414, Seagull Artist Mosaic
bass is Carvin LB70
mics are AT4033 and ADK Hamburg
Mic pre is ART DPS
compressor is DBX MC-6

Thanks batsbrew.

Your above post (in addition to listening closer to the song once again) has answered the question I asked.

I think it's funny you're still using Sonar 6. I started using Sonar with version 4 PE and I have upgraded several times and finally to Sonar X1 PE and also to the one after that (which I still haven't downloaded because my computer OS is only Windows XP. Although I've upgraded I'm still using Sonar 8 PE because I never wanted to learn the new program. The whole user interface was changed in the X1 version and I couldn't find anything anymore. All the menus and toolbars were changed. (Much like this forum, there used to be a Quote button on the above toolbar but it's now gone. LOL) It just seems easier to use the old program than to re-learn the newer ones. LOL

Anyway thanks for taking the time to respond and posting your production techniques, it is much appreciated.

heheh, me too!

hey, it works.

it does everything i need.

as it is, the custom PC i had built as a DAW, has done quite well.

but it is time to upgrade the pc, and when i do, i'll upgrade to the most recent version of SONAR,

and then use it for about 10 years.

but it should inform people,
that they do NOT have to chase gear.

the sound does NOT come from the gear.

if i never had to use a single plugin of any type,
ever again,
i could still get my sound.
