I guess I am one of those oddities that really enjoy watching the Olympics and the spirit behind this event. Admittedly I probably spend too many hours watching but this only occurs every 4-years. Thanks though to technology and the power of the DVR in order to optimize the viewing time. It is great seeing sporting events that are not always seen in prime time and with the best players represented from around the world. Countries I never heard of. It is always sad that our political leaders cannot adopt the friendship and unity of the Olympics (and music for that matter) in global world interactions. Somebody on this planet always has to ruin it.

I would rather watch a EPL game ... and Sunderland did not deserve to lose that game! More excitement.

For my tastes, the Olympics is nothing but an advertising for professional sports now, and not much fun anymore, specially "sports" that are not really "sports". It was nice to see the women's soccer games, though, even if the US did not make it, but Pia Sundhagen knew what she had to do to take the game to the overblown Americans! And she has done it twice, now, also beating Brazil with the same strategy. I think she will do the same against Germany, but not sure she can beat them ... 3 in a row ... is a tall mountain to climb! Like Mt Everest.

I'm also an oddity with you Ken (birds of a feather?)......I do enjoy watching the best of the best competing while representing their countries. It must be a great honour that instills patriotism and love for their country.

No, I really do enjoy big events like this where the pressure is exponential.  I remember performing at competitions and I marvel at these super humans being able to perform like this at such a high level.   Sports are not high on my agenda of favorite things to do, unless it listening to the Huey Lewis and the News album by that name, but I am amazed at how these people are able to do this.  Here in america it's burnished by the shiny matt lauer and the today show bs.  That always makes me giddy.

I have to ask...any specifically come to mind in this regard? Synchronized swimming, equestrian, shooting, perhaps?

By the way, synchronized swimming fascinates me as to how the heck they do that stuff (and I guess also, WHY?). But I am always somewhat in awe when i see it.

Coz they're wearing swimsuits....almost like the Ms. World competition (minus the talent).

As someone who has beaten the (current at the time) World #1's in two completely different sports/sports-like disciplines (speed skating and darts), I agree with both of the above sentiments!

Heck, I've even been on ESPN twice (but not for any serious event like competitive eating).

As an event and perhaps the most valuable tradition in the human cultural history, I like the Olympics.
The event  should be downsized, though. It's intolerable that there are nowadays only less than a dozen countries that
can afford to arrange it.

Two international Olympic Cities should be built somewhere, one for summer- the other for winter Olympics, funded by all the member countries. Then the games would take place at the same place every time, and in between all the countries could use the facilities for training camps and lesser tournaments. There are too many abandoned and crumbled sports arenas around the world already, built only for the Olympics and then left for little use and maintenance.

The package should include a way to compensate for the travelling expenses of a section of the audience.
That would "simulate" having the games in different parts of the world. One time compensated travel from Latin America, the other time from South-East Asia etc. The chosen country/countries could also decorate the city or only certain arenas in their own way and arrange exhibitions, theatre and whatever to promote themselves. One country could sponsor soccer, one track'n'field etc.

I nominate this for "Coolest Idea!"
