How do you work on one pair without a second pair?

I use three pairs (or half a dozen pairs of each of the three lense types) :o/
If your optician can't figure out the suitable progressive lenses for you purposes, then one option might be eye surgery, if it fits you case. Not a cheap option, though.
(Why doesn't anyone produce neckties inside which you can carry your glasses? It's quite handy to have them
hung on the inside loop of a tie, but with a little more design it would be much better.)

I've tried that, but I need one hand to hold the frame and the other to operate the screwdriver.

I hate progressives.  They make my head hurt 
 
So I have two pair of proper bifocals and 6 or 8 of those cheap readers at strategic locations around the house.

Tri focals here. Dedicated readers in the studio and on my office desk. PITA, you bet. I "stack" readers when I have to for close work.
