I use the S-Type Console Emulator and I don't hear any change whatsoever when I turn it on. However I do hear the change when it is turned off. So basically, to turn it on I have to press the power icon on then off again. I am using it on a buss through which 4 guitar tracks are being fed. I can't get the S-Type feel when I mix-down because of this. Anybody else having this issue? I am using the S-type but it happens on the N-Type and A-Type as well. LANCE

Don't feel alone! There is great debate about whether or not this plug even does anything at all. I think it is safe to say that most of us are struggling to understand how to get the most out of this emulator. I have tried it in every location on all kinds of audio tracks and the results are minimum to nothing. The S-Type has no difference at all, on or off. The N setting has a little more sizzle to the top end, much like a hint of enhancing. The A setting is somewhere between the S and N. On some tracks when you toggle it on and off there is no discernible difference! What little difference I can hear sometimes is very pleasing. I said in another thread, I wish the effect was more pronounced so I can control how much I want. It's frustrating to hear something you want more of and the plug in just won't give you anymore. The one position I have found that gave me strong results was to put the CE channel plug into the master buss and crank the trim up. Only then do I hear a pronounced effect. This has me wondering if there is a problem with the audio not being at a loud enough level for the CE to work properly. Let's hope that Cake kicks in with some help or someone can explain why everyone is having such a hard time getting results from this plug. I was very excited about the CE being included in X2. Now we are all scratching our heads.

I've found if I put them last in the ProChannel on all tracks, and the buss versions on busses, and have them switched on from the beginning works best.

I then play around with the trim and drive knobs.  I do carefully gain stage to make sure none of the modules are too hot and clip.  It's handy to insert an empty PC FX Chain Module in between to do this, e.g. after the Quad EQ if it boosts the signal.

If I want to hear the difference I quick group ALL the Console Emus and turn them off together.  Then I hear a big difference.  Turning them on and off individually doesn't.  Subtle, I guess, but definitely noticeable.

The effect of them is cumulative, as Seth pointed out.  It's when you hear them all on, and then all off that you notice it.

I have done this with several clients and students, and they all agree the Console Emus sound better.  How they describe the change varies, but that's human nature.  It's also interesting to quick group and try the S, N & A modules to compare them.  I admit the SSL one is the most subtle.  But I believe that is true of the SSL desks in reality, they colour the sound less than a Neve or Trident desk.

Just my penny's worth..

Well stated,JB! I have been experimenting all day with the CEs. I posted in another thread here that I am finding that if I record my audio a little hotter the CE seems to be more responsive. I usually try to stay around the -12 range when tracking. I find that if I track more around the -6 range the CE seems to respond more and the difference is more audible. This is with no plugins in the FX bin and the only PC plug activated is the CE. The gain staging seems to be the missing link here. I will try the tip with the empty FX Chain and see how that works. At any rate, I am a little closer to understanding how to get this plug to be more responsive. At least I am now hearing a subtle difference on the S setting that I was not getting before. The N setting still seems to be the most noticeable.

Thanks for the responses. Like I said I am using it on a buss and it is last on the Pro Channel. However it is not on all tracks. The problem I'm having is that turned on it does nothing HOWEVER there is a HUGE change in sound when I turn it off; vastly different from before I first turned it on. It's very strange. It's not that I just can't hear the difference when I turn it on but that it only changes the sound when I then turn it off. I will experiment with putting it on all my guitar tracks though.

It's more noticeable on some sounds than it is on others. I hear a big difference when it's used on strings. Also I was playing with a Roland 303 emulator the other night and I heard a big difference when switching between the CE types.
