Howdy y'all
I'd regard myself as a newbie to recording so hopefully my question fits into this section.  i am doing a punch in to fix a mistake i made on a guitar track.  Weird thing is, the punch in has for some reason dropped in volume to the rest of the track. I cant find anything in the sonar settings page which might explain this.  I didnt adjust any volumes. I simply clicked on the punch in icon and dragged the two sliders to where i want the punch in and re-recorded that small clip.
many thanks for any help.

What exactly is it you're recording?

A guitar via a mic? Vocals? Hardware synth? Soft synth?

Hi Jonsey
It's an accoustic guitar with a built in pick up.  Standard jack plug going into an M audio USB sound card.  Im using sonar X2 by the way.  Hope this helps.
Cheers.

You didn't by chance hit a volume control on the guitar,

or a gain knob on the MAudio ?

That would be the only 2 things I could think of.

Does the Wave Form appear to be the same size/levels in Track View or is the quieter clip smaller in wave form?

Hi Digi
Its the darndest thing.  The vol for the guitar is actually inside and the settings on the m audio is as they were  :(    The wave form looks the same.    I think i'll delete the punch in, save the cahnges, close Sonar and reopen it.  I'll try the punch in again.     Just on a separate quick question on punch in.  Is it difficult to adjust the crossfade on punch in.    Last song i did, the punch in was ok but you could hear the "skip" where the punch in was.  It wasnt very bad but you could hear this slight difference in the clip.  it was kind of like listening to an old vinyl record with a slight skip.   No biggie y'all but have you guys ever come across this?   Cheers for the replies neighbours.   :)

I like to go a bit before and after the correction and then slip edit the best takes in while NOT letting anything over lap.  You have to zoom way in to do it good.  Try to catch it at a note change, strum, beat, etc...

If you need to fade, I will let the clips lap a bit and have the fades come in and out together (overlapping).

To do the fades,  Just hover next to the edge of the clip by the upper corner and you should see it pop up giving the option to drag the fade

Don't forget to slip edit out the bad parts behind your clip by splitting the original clip and dragging the edges to meet as described above if that makes sense.

One thing that might be your original posting prob is if its the Punch In clip that jumps in Volume is that both clips are playing when it gets to your Punch In clip.  (ex:  Say original clip is running at 3 dB and you add a PunchIn clip at 3 dB over that, you would be hearing a 3 dB JUMP while the extra clip is playing.-Assuming the clip portion behind it isn't deleted or muted)

That would explain the raise or lower in Vol you are hearing.

Adding clips/takes/punch ins anywhere adds dB to the track in what ever clips are playing.

Thanks Mike.  i must admit its a bit greek right now but i'll open a mess project and goof around with it. i noticed in the help files there is slip edit which they describe as non destructive and then the "offline" version which is destructive.  Not too sure what they mean other than destructive is taking a sledge hammer to your best china dishes. But the help diagrams do show a graph you can drag to adjust its line of curve.  Yep, think i'll definatley open a mess prject to goof with on this one.
Redid that punch in from scratch by the way and still the same issue with the volume.  Rechecked all vol controls but am at a loss.  I'll have a look at cake tv and see if there's any vids.  If no joy, i'll mail the help guys and see if this is a known issue etc.
Thanks for all the tips Mike.

You can always copy and paste or duplicate the track and experiment on that one.

Its really simple once you get the hang of whats going on with editing clips

Good luck

Are you running X1, X2, or ???
