I'm using Line 6 Monkey as my midi - keyboard. I'm going through Tutorial 2 and I'm creating a new project. When I open the File New,  the dialog box opens but the only list I have available is called Templat List is called "Normal". the tutorial says to select midi - where to I get the midi template from, do I have to create one? I read up on creating a new template but am not sure if I'm doing it correctly because everytime I chose new - I get the same dialog box. Advice on how to do Tutorial # 2?

What version of Sonar are you using?
In the templates, you should see stuff like Normal, Blank, MIDI only, etc.
Also, Monkey is software. It is not a MIDI input device. Do you maybe have a KB37 interface with the built-in keyboard?

If you're just getting started, I wouldn't scratch my head with the templates, because opening the "Normal" you can add or remove tracks with two mouse-clicks.
The question is confusing, to say the least. How on earth could one use an updater software as a MIDI-keyboard??
Anyway, if it includes some kind of a virtual keyboard, for MIDI recording you need a hardware keyboard, if you don't want to draw notes with a mouse.

Sorry. I have a KB37 midi keyboard which I've used to enter notes into Finale so the problem isn't the cable connections.  I think it might be that I am not mapping the new track to sonar,  I'm using version 8.5 producer . The input device defaults to Asio Kb37, is this correct or should it be something else. I know i a not doing something. Is there something I should be working for to map the KB37 to Sonar 8.5?

I hate to be the one to say it but your trying to do the very basic stuff and you obviously are not reading the instructions. Go to the help files and do a little reading for a few days while playing with the software. There's no point us randomly quoting instructions from the help files for each step when it's all very clearly there,,, or buy the book from Scott.

Good point. However, I was reading the Help files and couldn't get any where with it.

I think I found the problem. I'm not sure out to set up the Input, Bank, Patch or Output.

Input is presently defaulting to OMNI - if I'm using the keyboard, shouldn't it be the KB37?

Midi-Channel - should that be General or Channel 1?

Bank - selected

Patch - need to select an instrument so I've chosen Piano

Output : KB37

I think this is the problem. the other instructions are clear it is this part which is not part of the Tutorial. The tutorial is assuming you know how to map it properly

I confused on how to map Sonar to the midi. When I open the new file, it has OMNI as default. Shouldn't this be the KB37 Omni?

Bank is fine, but I would need to select an instrument otherwise nothing will happen.

For the output - should it be the KB37?

Sorry to be such a pain but I'm feeling a little overwhelmed with trying to figure things out so any help would be appreciated.

thanks

Michael

Actually, I just went through the entire Tutorial. The midi was recording what I played. I could see the actual printed music and I could see the wave forms. However, I couldn't hear it being played. this is how I set it up

Input - KB37 Omni
Midi Channel - General
Bank - Bank
Patch - Acoustic Piano
Output - KB37 Toneport
Track 5 - this is the midi track I inserted.

I can see the drum-roll view, the events list, etc but I can't hear anything. I can hear the tutorial 1 I created and I can hear the demos provided by sonar but I cannot hear the midi now.

Something is not being mapped properly and I don't know enough about the properly to know what is missing.

thanks

Those aren't waveforms on a MIDI track. Those are representations of the notes you played. MIDI is not audio, it is control codes that tell a synth what to play and when and how to play it.

Check the MIDI Control submenu for the KB37 and make sure its set to receive MIDI on the channel you're sending it on. If you're sending on channel 1 and its receiving on channel 2, you won't hear anything.

I'm not familiar with the equipment you have, so might be misunderstanding the problem, but where are you expecting the sound to come from ? Does the keyboard have it's own built in sounds ? If it is just a midi controller it needs to be pointed at something capable of making a sound, like a softsynth or a midi keyboard with it's own on-board sounds before you will hear anything.

No, it's a combined midi keyboard and audio interface.  I get the impression that the OP has this hardware working ok but is unaware of softsynths.
