I also use the Line 6 plugin, and you might be able to get slammin' deal on it right now. If you can find the now-discontinued Gear Box Gold Plug-in w/Tone Direct DI-G interface on clearance you might do very well on price, plus get an extra audio interface (or, think of it as a really big USB dongle).

To add to that, just over a couple of weeks ago Line 6 released the POD Farm plug-in. It lets you use any of the tones from several POD (and other) products in your DAW in plug-in format. The best part: it's FREE. It's compatible with the above, and that includes most (if not all?) of the Line 6 tone packs. And if you already own one of the PODs with USB, all you need to do is go download the software!

I own the Line6 Gearbox Gold set, and the bass amp and cabinet sims in it work very well for me.

The IK Multimedia Ampeg SVX has a great rep too, as you can see.

For me, I have active electronics on my bass and can get a wide range of tones going direct. I run it through the front of my UA LA610 so I have a tube pre in the chain.

I hate you I needs to gets me one of thos LA610s . . .

I've got a Yamaha TRB-6 with active picks, i've run it through every amp sim I can find and unless I'm intentionally going for a overdriven sound they all suck the life out of the bass. Bad POD is the worst offender.

I do have the Berhinger Bass V-Amp Pro (hardware). It's cool too.

Yeah I agree with this - the nice thing about the V-amp is you can get a killer tone to play with, then either record this, record dry or record them both at the same time for tweaking afterwards.

Great versatility and some useful presets to get you started.

Hello, Any advice on buying a bass amp modeler/plugin?

In addition to the excellent suggestions already posted you might consider recording direct and then using one of the bass amp impulses in Perfect Space to give it some speaker oomph. Since you already own it you won't have to pay anything and it really sounds quite nice.

BTW I have one in my rack and like it , just wish it had spdif IN to process a recorded track ...

+! TO THE LINE 6 GOLD, really nice bass emus . The IK free thingy is the Bass SVT fx , which has only has a limited set of presets, but still sounds nice, and you can't beat the price.. dont overlook NIs Guitar Rig 3 which I also have, and there is a NI sale right now ...
