Rasure
Sonar (apart from its own bugs) is rock solid on Win 7. Been on Win 7 for years, never felt the need to update/upgrade and I`m so glad I didn't.  Just get everything as you want it then do an image back up. One thing I always do is if I do need to do a fresh install is always keep the same computer name and same hard drive serial. Once Windows basic install is up and running I change my Hard drive serial number to one I always use, before installing any other software. You can find apps online to do this.

I plan on sticking with Sonar as long as I can, but I bought Cubase and am trying to learn it.  It makes sense to have a Plan B in the background.   Though I sure wish Cubase would study Sonar and take some of its best attributes in mind.

(Please - someone - buy Sonar!!!  Make me pay a yearly fee, even a monthly fee like I do to Adobe and Microsoft.)

I've been in the middle of a DAW testing frenzy these past few days -- Samplitude and Reaper (both of which I own), plus Mixcraft, Digital Performer, Studio One 3, n-Track Studio -- and all of them have their strengths and weakness, and some nice features and clever design elements, etc. But absolutely none of them have the same intuitive, sensible and flexible workflow of Sonar. I was already a dedicated Sonar user long before this week's disaster, but these last few days have made me appreciate even more just how well thought this software is, and how elegantly it is implemented. I'm on Windows 10, at the moment, which is the platform most vulnerable to breaking Sonar with an update, and should that happen, I honestly would just pull out my Windows 7 discs and roll back to the earlier OS and keep using Sonar. I'd rather be on Win 7 with Sonar, than Win 10 with any of the other candidates, at least at this point...

Sad news BUT, Platinum is so good it already exceeds my abilities. As long as it keeps working on my current Windows 10, I can't really find any reason to go to another DAW. I was going to get another year of updates at Xmas. My updates ended in March, 2017 and I didn't really see anything new that I HAD to have at this point. That's because they already gave us maybe TOO much. Honestly, what more could you want? They really did TOO well so there was no need to buy much of anything else. Version 8.5 was real good and when Melodyne was incorporated, that was AWESOME. Glad I got the multitrack Melodyne and I also picked up that Expanded Vocalign - hope they keep working. I had suspected something like this was in the works as I no longer received the monthly news letter and I really couldn't think of much more they could invent.

I wonder if one can buy all of the last updates in a single purchase before they go by-by for real?

I've installed Studio One as a backup and had a good look at Pro Tools, but I'll be sticking with Sonar Platinum until it stops working. Hopefully that won't happen before Cakewalk is magically resurrected by a kindly (and wealthy) benefactor, however unlikely that may be.

That would be great -- and I'd be all over it if they opened the store for one last "everything-must-go" clearance sale. I imagine it could be one last injection of cash for the company, since I bet a lot of folks would take the chance to grab updates, accessory items, expansions packs and effects modules before they were gone for good. Cakewalk could use the money to pay off debts, or something.

But the chance of that happening is probably highly unlikely, I would guess. I don't really know, as these sort of business and commerce situations are usually pretty complicated, but I'd have to wonder if possibly company assets are frozen, e-commerce service relationships are severed, support staff for the online store no longer with the company, and other things like that.

Be great if it happened, though...

I stay with my Sonar Platinum. I have cloned my newly updated and stabil PC with sonar. Whenever a daw comes with new breakthrough tecnology i might consider to change mine.
