Plan to continue using 8.5, along with Reaper. Thought about the Cubase crossgrade, but pretty sure 8.5 doesn't qualify. But even if it did, I see no reason to change what I'm doing, because it works for me. And the Cubase forum just doesn't have the warm feel, not to mention rapid response, of this place. I'll be looking to haunt whichever Son Of Sonar Forum survives.

I am staying with SONAR until it won't run any more. I may take advantage of the nice Studio One cross-grade offer to have that as Plan B, but based on my time with the S1 demo, SONAR is it for me.

There is something romantic about using a discontinued software...[insert analogy]

As a hobby musician I will use sonar as long as possible. As stable as sonar with me now I do not know why I should buy me in the next few years another sequencer. I would then rather invest the money in plugins or virtual instruments.

Features in Sonar
ARA support
VST3 support
WIN10 compatible
64bit mix engine
Rewire (with Kinetic or P5 :))
creative tools like drum replacer
matrix editor .... and so on
and all the plugins like PX64, Breverb, Console emulator ... and so on.
I do not know now how the other daws are. For the last time I had cubase and logic in mind in '98. However, I have no need for it at all.
the only stone that can get in my way is the product activation during a new installation. I hope, if cakewalk actually close, we get as a user an art offline activation file.

P.s .: I still can not imagine that cakewalk actually stops. I think there will be another surprise next year. There are some software vendors with a much smaller customer base who can easily survive. I think there's something else coming.

cheers tomas

I think we have all wasted too much time and energy looking around for alternatives to SPLAT when, if truth be told, it should run for years to come without problems. Up until I made the move to Sonar Artist (1 year) and then SPLAT lifetime updates (sucker!), I'd been using Sonar 8.5 for years without complaint. I think SPLAT spoilt us, and now we feel really hard done by to find anything similar.
About 20 years ago I worked in an audio editing studio (I was a project manager, not editor) and the studio used Cool Edit (yep you read it) before switching to Pro Tools. I hated Pro Tools. I didn't find it intuitive or user friendly. That's when I bought my first Sonar Home Studio 2004. From there I went to Sonar 4 Studio, then Producer, upgraded to Sonar 8. I never ever wanted to go back to using Pro Tools, even if it is the industry standard. It's clunky. Yuck!
My editor friends have recommended Reaper whole-heartedly, and I'm definately going to check it out and road test it. But in the meantime - I just want to get back to making music and not panic about Sonar going off-line.
Back-up all the exe files - download some demo DAWs - But above all, get back to making music guys.

I am staying for as long as possible. If a Win10 update kills Sonar I guess someone smart would help me to roll back to the last "Sonar friendly" Win10 and I'll be good again. Am I reasonably optimistic or too optimistic?

I'm is still doing everything I need to with SONAR Platinum.  So, like others, I'll stick with it as long as possible.  Hell, I could almost live with just SONAR 8.5 if I wasn't so spoiled by all the great recent advances/additions.
