Interesting timing:  Protools 9 anounced

ADC
96 tracks
works on any hardware
notation derived from Sibelius
iLock

My theory on why an improved staff view was not included in Sonar X1:  Cakewalk had to get X1 (with its improved workflow) out the door in time to compete with Pro Tools 9, flextime in Garage Band, a possible Cubase 6.0, and before Christmas.

Oh, and before Reaper version 4.0 (with included staff editor)!!!

There was simply not enough time, resources and / or business justification to focus on the staff...

If Reaper gets a staff view at least we know Cakewalk will have one in Version X2 I'm sure.

Reaper with a staff view is wishful thinking on my part

I know.

Even Studio One said it doesn't plan on a Staff view for the future.

Really, that's too bad.  I fully expected it in release 2.0 of Studio One, considering some of the devs are from the Cubase camp.  Add to that the fact that even Acoustica's MixCraft was able to include a staff editor in pretty short order.

With regard to Reaper, it is an acknowledged feature request, and they have said the plan is to have some level of staff editing in the future.  What better time than version 4.0!!!

I'm afraid we will see Cubase, PT, and Logic pull away from Sonar, leaving it in the dust in this regard.

I don't know about leaving it in the dust.
But if Reaper does pull this off, they will get my money for version 4.
My  thought is that Cakewalk really wants to get it done. But, the new UI made it impossible this time around. With the new UI in place they can have the staff view be more drag and drop with the new skylight.  That is my hope on the staff / notation view.

The thing about notation views is, while they're very important to the people who need to use them, they're not really a mass-market feature.

That would be true if it was not available in Cubase, Protools, Logic, Digital Performer, Samplitude, Mixcraft, Garage Band, and I'm sure I'm missing some...

That's not what I meant; I know it's in those products. But if you were sitting down with a potential features list, asking "which of these will generate the most sales", I don't think notation would figure very highly.

I make no value judgements about this, I just reckon that's the way it is.

If reaper does pull it off.. I can see me spending my cash there too...

I have been using Sonar since version 1 and there comes a point when 'hoping' for substantial improvements comes a bit much.

I wonder if X1 has developed the drum maps feature into something similar to cubase expression??
