with each version there are specific things e.g. plugins that aren't on the new ones.. so yep some people keep older versions on simply because a plugin was a special to a version at a specific time.

I can understand all the extra work involved with license transfers etc. just I doubt I'm the only one that has multiple Dim Pro's .. so... I would rather even a charitable organisation benefited from.

You could sell it, but it will only work for 30 days.  Cakewalk needs to register it, and you are already the owner.  So it wouldn't let anyone else regsiter it, unless you give them your Cake ID, too.

You can keep it on the laptop or install X1 on it.  The licence sez you can use it on only one computer at a time.  I've had version of SONAr on 3 computers before, but my kids never used it on the hand-me-down computers.

One thing I love about keeping old versions active, is when I am messing around with say..X1 and it crashes, I can immediately open up 8.5.3 and continue tinkering while X1 shuts down.  (Sometimes taking up to 5 minutes on my Vista machine)

Best thing I ever done was switch from Vista 64 to Windows 7 64bit. Difference is night and day, my computer (especially more so Sonar) is so much more stable.

I think it's a really good point that you have to agree, only when you install the product, that you won't sell or give it away. I can' remember anyone telling me this when I bought it. It may be written somewhere, I've been trying to think if there is anything else that once you've bought it, you can't then either sell or give away. I haven't come up with anything yet - so to my mind, it wouldn't be normal for people to inquire about this.

I think it's really worth pointing out to prospective buyers that they can't resell. I'm going to move over to Propellerhead's Reason (just too many crashes and things going wrong with Sonar for me). If Reason doesn't work out or I move on, then I can sell and transfer the licence. With Sonar I just have to write off the money.

Hi,
I know this topic is some days old, but I'm still thinking Cakewalk could benefit when selling Sonar would be supported. With german company's, for example Steinberg (Cubase) and Magix (Samplitude), it is no problem. There you can delete registrations or whole accounts. For example with Magix, you have to pay normally 10 Euro's for deleting a product. After that you can sell it.

It's also a fact, that many people in germany don't buy Cakewalk Sonar, because they can't sell it -  and no one know's what the future will bring. So if you are in need to sell it to make some money, you don't have the chance to do. And finally a new user will also buy future updates, an old user working interim with another daw won't.
So maby Cakewalk should think about it and of course they can require a little payment for this service - like others also do. And a company being convinced of their products should not be so afraid, that too many people will change. I think it could be a chance to achieve more users, at least outside the USA.
Kind regards,
Timo

no you cant sell it.
because the ula agreement you agreed to when purchasing/installing the software is much like a license and not a "I bought the software thing"
you cant sell your license.

once purchased the software is non refundable/non transferable.

"Can I sell Sonar 8.0/8.5 Producer retail box version after X1 purchase" Nope. You can't legally do that with any software.
