I tried to use step recording and read the manual.
And I could see the contents like below.
 
"  9.  Play a note or chord on your MIDI controller. When you release the note(s), the insertion point moves by the step size, if the Auto Advance check box is enabled. If Auto Advance is not enabled, you can release the notes and record more notes, or you can use the Navigation controls to advance the insertion point. If you are still holding down a note or notes when you advance the insertion point, the step size of the held notes is extended by the current step size.  "
 
My question is about the sentence with bold.
Is it means that duration of the notes will be extened as I click numpad enter(default key for next step)?
 
I tried to uncheck "auto advance" and hold MIDI keyboard then pressed numpad enter key four times expecting the duration of holding key will be changed to whole note(when step size is 1/4 note step).
But it didn't change and still recorded as 1/4 note so I'm wondering that I misunderstood the sentence above or I missed something.

I have to say, I get the same results - although I do not recall it working like that in the past.  With or without the auto-advance on the beat advances when you hold a note and press the advance button a number of times, and the Now Marker shifts properly, BUT the note duration is only that of the initial step and NOT the extended length intended.

I would say that either the doc is incorrect or there is a bug in step recording.

I sequence using the Step Sequencer, and a great many others use the Piano Roll View.

Maybe it is not working correctly although it would be a very big feature for Sonar if it works correctly.

Just hope that Cakewalk fix it(instead of fixing the manual :)).

But they are not the same as step recording. A typical use case of step recording for me would be a complex keyboard chord sequence. I can finger the chords, but my chops are not good enough to change smoothly and in time, enter step recording, its much faster than using the mouse in step sequencer or PRV.
 
I was unaware of the feature in the OP so I have not tried it. It would be useful if it worked. I am away from my DAW and can't try it out at the moment.

I completely agree.  I should have continued the sentence to say that for me Step Sequencer was my main method of midi entry, and that for many others Piano Roll View is their main method - more to convey a lack of recent experience in step recording than to convey them being equivalent replacements.


There is DEFINITELY a place for Step Recording, and it certainly does look like the poster has uncovered a bug in the step recording process.  It's been so long since I used step recording.  I may have gone away from it because of precisely the issue posted in this thread - my brain is having a brown-out, and I cannot recall why I switched away from using Step Record.
