What do you make of the suggestion in SOS that it makes getting a balanced mix easier? They made the point quite strongly that they didn't think slapping it on existing mixes added much value, but that it eased the mixing process. I'm quite interested in that.

I suppose I should try the demo, but I don't have an iLok, and I don't really fancy buying one just to try out demos of things.

Well...this might sound crazy but the modeled crosstalk adds a bit of (no I'm not kidding) desireable hiss and noise...more so when you crank the drive.  But this is just they way analogue consoles behave when pushed in my experience.  Plus, there is a definite  "smoothing" effect...especially on the API setting.  That said I think anyone could easily live without it.  I mean, why are we all so hellbent on recreating old hissy analogue sounds??  I guess because they sound good.  Or do they??

Thing is, my experience is that alot of the sought-after gear and effects ARE very subtle in their differences, and it's more of a sum of all the parts (tracks? :O) ) that seem to do the thing. You read these interviews with some big producers and they get into this high-end AD converter over that high-end AD - jeez, anyone ever did THAT comparison? You're talking splitting hairs..

But when you get rid of all obvious problems such as bad cables, cheap mics etc etc, I suppose the next level is to address all the details.. A friend of mine mixed some stuff at British Grove (Mark Knopfler's place) with Mick Glossop about three years ago. At that time, they were throwing out their old ADC's in favour of Prism (not the cheapie Orpheus either) - at a HUGE expense. Does anyone else care, or hear the difference, or pay more because of it? It becomes an academic game for the geeks, in my opinion. And bless the geeks - they are the technical pioneers.

But anyone can hear a good song over a bad one :O)

OK, I just did a comparison on one of my own mixes - 47 tracks and 8 busses. I randomly chose the Trident model and pushed the drive up to about 3 O Clock. Bounced them both and put the two files next to each other. All I can say is VCC has officially blown me away. The results are far more obvious and pleasing than the Sound On Sound demo.

I called my wife in and said "which one do you prefer"?, not telling her whiich is which. She chose the VCC mix hands down, citing, Her comments: "it's much friendlier and more pleasant to listen to... And it seems bigger, but not louder."

Nuff said. I'm sold.

There is another one out there called Sonimus Satson.  Way cheaper but even more subtle...

Glad you got it to work. The Trident is my personal fav too.

I bought and put on an existing mix. Same deal, 3db push on all channels and I could hear an audible difference. It sounded better but I must tell you I don't care why. I must mention that there is a bug for labeling VCC in X2 and Slate Digital knows about it. You have copy and paste the names in. The keyboard is useless.

Just curious: have you compared it to the Console Emulator that's included in Sonar?

I was wondering the same thing!

VCC has the oversampling feature which makes all the difference. It feels more refined to me (sonically), BUT, it's buggy as hell inside X2. It tends to crash the project if you don't open it in the "busses" view of the track window BEFORE clicking anywhere on the console view, esp the busses. If you get what I'm saying. But I still prefer VCC, even though it has this problem in X2.
