I have been emailed a link to MasterWriter, which is the first I've ever heard of it.

Seems quite expensive - $150, regular 200.

Looks like others have paid as much as $280 for it. Ouch!

Based on reviews, most don't think it was worth that price at all. Some aren't even using it now.

Other reviews reveal competitors anywhere from free [VersePerfect] to [$25], RhymeGenie, etc.

Anyone use it?

Any opinions?

I bought it years ago and never use it.

Got a couple of paperback rhyming dictionaries that suit me well enough.

Yeah, I too just recently happened to stumble upon my paperback copies of my rhyming dictionary & thesaurus - both covered in a layer of dust.  Haha!

MasterWriter is essentially the first rhyming dictionary software that was able to find slant rhymes with a 'sound alike' feature. It has only received one major update throughout the years and has always been very expensive. Rhyme Genie, however, has been very actively developed and Genie's intelligent rhyme algorithm is in a class of its own when it comes to finding accurate slant rhymes. Even though it's only $25 Rhyme Genie also comes bundled with TuneSmith which allows you to keep track of writer splits and copyright info as well as create pro lyric sheets with guitar chord charts. The free Verse Perfect cannot find slant rhymes at all and therefore does not offer any advantages over your good old paperback rhyming dictionary.

Awesome details.

Thanks MrDecibel.

Edit
Thanks for the informative reply.

I had not noticed that this was your very first post.

I wish to say welcome on board as well.

My pleasure and thank you for your warm welcome. After leaving my comment I went to MasterWriter's Facebook page to see if an update is in the works. Unfortunately MasterWriter hasn't even delivered a long promised iPad version yet. Rhyme Genie users can install their iPad / iPhone version with the same serial number as the desktop version. Caveat emptor.

I have had and used Master Writer (MW) for quite a few years.   I find it convenient to open and use to see dozens, sometimes hundreds of words that rhyme and even phrases that rhyme.

The tech support has also been excellent on the few times I needed some assistance.

One feature I really like is that it has integrated into it, a service called Songuard which is like a copyright by 3rd party. Since I tend to write lots of music, paying the LOC copyright costs per song or even the compilation fees would be expensive to say the least.  Songuard is a free service to all the users of MW.

I also have used the books and dictionaries but found them to be a bit tedious and they don't have near the lists of words as I have available with a few clicks in MW. The price has come down, and if you write a lot of songs, the Songuard service will pay for the software in short order.

That's good to know.

I decided to go with Rhyme Genie, [at least for now], because of the excellent price, the great reviews and the free updates for life.

I also like the option of the free Tune Smith, which I haven't got yet, but did look over in great detail.

I have an HTC S one.

Do you happen to know if this same option applies for androids?

Thanks

Yes, I suppose it would - so long as - it carries the same or better protection & 'legal muscle' that the Library of Congress does, being well established by now.

This is not the only one I've heard of, but it seems to be the automatic 'go to' place to list your songs, even at their prices.

There are other ones I'm sure, like the one here in Canada, which is all but useless, as it offers to list your songs by title only - [last time I checked anyways].

Easily visible, are the inherent problems with that and the ultra-easy work around for would - be thieves is to simple change the song title.

But the more protection the better, I would say.

I didn't know that MW offered that. Thanks for that info.

Don't get me wrong. MasterWriter did offer a unique product when it was released years ago. It just hasn't aged that gracefully. Songuard gives you the same legal protection as uploading your song to any other new cloud storage does (Amazon/iCloud/Soundcloud). There is also the question of how long Songuard will be supported. As soon as the server goes down there really is no way for you to prove your 'date of creation' unless you have uploaded your songs to other servers as well. You cannot go to trial without registering your song with the copyright office anyhow. In my opinions songuard is not a compelling reason to pay $150 for MasterWriter when Rhyme Genie is far superior in any other way and only cost $25.
