  • Sync Clock Conundrum: Need to fix some tracks that were recorded with an ADAT *SOLVED*

Hi, guys. Hope you've all been well. I've got a problem I'm hoping I could get some ideas about. I've got a series of tracks that were recorded with an ancient version of Nuendo and an ADAT machine. I no longer have access to the ADAT. When I listen back to the tracks they are slow and low pitched. I think this is because the DAW was using the ADAT's clock. So I'm just wondering about possible ways to correct this either in Nuendo or X2. Am I stuck with time stretch/pitch shift?

Thanks.

you could try acidizing (groove clip) the file and adjust the tempo, one of the first things i was taught with adat's was to get the machine to chase the DAW, do you still know the original tempos of the tracks, or there abouts ??

the only time id use an adta's clock would be to sync-ing it with other adats, one of my friends still swears by mixing down onto adat, says he likes it better than running **** through an interface, and back into the DAW lol

Hi, Chregg. They are songs that I wrote and I actually have a rough mixdown from that session that is the correct speed so I can use that for reference. It was recorded by someone else though so I didn't have any say on the tech end. The one thing I'm concerned about with turn it all into groove clips is it's reeeeally slow so I'm not sure if doing it that way will leave artifacts and then I'd still have to deal with the pitch issue which AFAIK can also add artifacts. I also think that it gets slower throughout the session. Not sure what that's all about. I will however give the Groove clip method a shot if I can't figure out how to get it sped up in one go. Thanks... cheers.

lol... Yeah I'm not sure why the guy did things the way he did. He had a couple other quirky habits too. I think he was being influenced by an old timer that hadn't caught on to the full digital experience yet.

I should also mention it is a full band/live recording so lots of tracks. I'm hoping to save most of them and only overdub my parts. However I may have to strip it down to just the drums and vocals then re-record everything else myself.

what your saying about groove clips and time stretching is true, it can leave artifacts, if the recordings start to sound slower, then its the adat, every time i use an adat i tend to fast forward a few minutes so i dont get that drag (10 mins ffw), sounds like your stuck with wat you've got Beepster, but by all means try groove clipping or time stretching

Okay, thanks for the input. I guess I was kind of hoping there was a way to get at the actual clock settings and speed it up that way. I've never used any external recording devices so it's all Greek to me. Cheers.

If you still had the adat then you'd have something to play with, do you not have the tape anywhere ???

It sounds that perhaps you have the wrong sample rate for them.  Try 44.1.
