  • X2a Frustration Increases - Please Excuse This Post

My apology in advance as I know I've done this before...

The constant frustrations of working with the new X paradigm is driving me crazy...  Especially when I need to edit in front of clients...

The zooming characteristics (not only my 'regular' complaints re: Lanes) are so rediculous (for me) that I just don't eblieve how hard it is to work in this program compared to the earlier versions (8.5.3).

I know there are many people very happy with it and finding work a pleasure, but there are also people saying that about doing MIDI in PT! (OK, not many... ;-))

Sonar always set itself apart from the pack not only in the feature set it offered, but in it's extraordinary ability to do many things in many ways... this has been seriously curtailed in the name of the new GUI and the Touch abilities.

An example of questionable? Why is it when I open set a new track to Lanes Open, does it revert to lanes closed when I record and give me all the empty Lanes.... When I again click on the Lane Display button after such, the display shifts and displays only the bottom most Lane at the top of the screen (all tracks and earlier layers are scrolled up/off screen and I must re-adjust the display). Is this really somehow a common need for others?

Please excuse my still constant irritation with these changes to Sonar... I understand that there are also happy users, but why couldn't this have been addressed? Is Roland truly so oblivious to these issues as they are making Sonar seem/become?

Solutions? Of course there are many, but meanwhile my life is passing by and I continue to be unhappy with a product that I've always depended on....

Sorry for the rant...

Thanks for the moment, and now I go back to editing in pain...

Ha! I almost forgot the immediate reason prompting me to post...

Ver often when I have snap disabled and the options are set to by/measure with smart grid disabled, clicking N to enable snap makes the settings change to 1/4??? I don't get it?

Could be worse Keni. At least no one is going to die as a result of the change.

you got good reasons here keni.
I agree with you on some things.

as far as the snap feature your talking about changing to 1/4.
its a new feature where you can have 2 snap settings to work off of in memory.
holding down control will toggle your other saved snap setting.
this enables the user to save another snap setting rather than thumbing threw the list to select another one.
kinda like that feature.
because I use it sometimes in 1/8 or 1 measure.
but this way I can use 1/8 and 1 measure then holding control and N turns it off.
those are my settings with it.

Hi Charlie...

Snap:

Thanks for the note... I didn't know the key for swapping them tho I knew of the feature and believe it will be handy for me (over time) as well...

This is different....... Picture your settings as smart grid off/by/measure and snap is disabled... Now simply click N..... Normally, all is well and it simply enables, but I'm trying to isolate when/where it does not (repeatability) as it only happens occassionally

Editing?

I think a large part of my frustration is related to zoom... I spend more time shuffling the screen around to make up for it's uncomfortable behavior... Not only do I dsilike the way Lanes zoom, but other zoom issues are annoying as well... All too often I find the screen scrolled so only the last track/lane is displayed at the top.... Nothing near what it should be... Other things such as zooming a track area (lasso) and instead of getting the zoom I selected, I get the tracks scrolled down with the zoomed (correct size/area) half-displayed and two tracks above it displayed...?

Other things?

Why does constrain not always work? Even if my movement wasn't quite perfectly horiz/vert, it shouldn't be able to move in 2 directions?

Personally, I need the Lanes (controls) to be of different color than the Tracks as my eye continually has a hard time finding what I'm after... I'd better stop here as I was about to launch into my "dislike" of Lanes to begin with...

There are many wonderful tools in Sonar and there always have been, but I am a very unhappy camper with these basic things which are "in-my-face" all day, every day...

BTW.... Nice job on the new video... You do a great job of explaining/displaying the methods...

Thanks for the support...

Rant all you want. I certainly don't mind. I like to be reminded that I'm not all alone. It's things like this that bring improvements, not praise. If Cakewalk thought they were putting out a flawless product, they may shelve it for the moment and go for the next shiny object while we suffer in silence. In this case, however, I wonder if they'll shelve it anyway and go for shinier objects.

Fortunately, I've had a pretty good weekend with Sonar. I've even had 32-bit Waves plug-ins running right alongside the 64-bit plugins in Sonar and not a single crash. THIS is what frustrates me right now. Intermittent issues.    .....well, and Take Lanes.

Thanks Brian...

I continue to use Sonar (exclusively) and get my work done...  Recording still is fine and I have no problems with plugins and the likes (overall)... But editing? That part is a mixed blessing. there are some tools that are very handy and other I can ignore, but the zoom issues and screen visibility keeps me re-sizing and scrolling the screen so much that I get annoyed every time....

I hope Roland is listening. they're not doing justice to their' purchase of Cakewalk. Prior to the X generation I never considered changing platforms before...

I'm now starting to think of Roland as the company instead of Cakewalk which is just a product line for them... Sad...

Yeah, zooming is not good for me. I end up having to use Ctrl+Arrow keys or left-click the +/- buttons on the screen. Using scroll-wheel is awful.

The editor for me, other than the fact that it's supposedly non-destructive, is one of the worst I've used in the last 10 years. This is no longer a learning-curve adjustment observation, either. I'm pretty fast with it now, and I still have issues (mostly with unpredictability). It's even worse in Take Lanes (very buggy). I can't trust it at all. I have to always go back and scrutinize every edited part individually to make sure that the edit was indeed done and correct. I never felt I had to do this with DP, Cubase, or even Soundforge.

And for anyone who argues that those programs have their own fair share of bugs in those same areas and we should just accept this is an advocate of keeping it that way.
