A few of you were so kind to assist me in picking the right firewire card and optimizing my new computer for Sonar.
Now I have everything in top of the line hardware but still X2 crashes. It simply stops without warning ( no dropouts what so ever) and stays there until the mouse is clicked - then the screen goes in grey mode and the only way out is CTRl+ALT+DEL and close Sonar.

This particular project is very big - around 45 tracks with a lot of audio clips containing individual effects as well as a few bus effects, and 10 drum busses, guitar busses and so on...
Sonar and Windows report lots of ressources available even when the most demanding parts are worked with. No MIDI tracks.

I have an new i7 with an expensive processor ranking among the fastest on the speed chart, 32 Gb RAM, 500 Gb SDD harddrive for Sonar alone, several TB on other drive, Firewire Card with the right Intel chipset, Allen & Heath firewire mixer ( ZED R16 ) latest drivers.... you name it...
I can only imagine that if Sonar i capable to run this project there has to be some parameters in Sonar to tweek to avoid chrashing. MIDI tracks Work without audible latency on all other Projects.

I'm open for ANY idea... any at all

Thanks
Bruno

Have you tested your RAM to be sure all is well?
Don't assume that because it's new, that all is well.
Test to be 100% sure.

Rule out the hardware first.
Then, the next most common source of instability is plugins.
See if you can pin down the problem to a specific plugin/s.

FWIW, There are no settings/tweaks inside of Sonar that affect stability.

Hi Daveny5

It's Win 8, 64 bit, disconnected from the internet, no antivirus and fairly limited from irrelevant processes...

Hmmm.... A shot from my hip so don't know if others may think this is relevant. Given all your tracks/clips on this song would a full 'Picture cache' folder be a possible culprit? I have no other epiphanies at the moment and someone here will likely get you on the corrective path. Carry on....

did you update your video or audio drivers, and/or are you running the latest?

are you on auto update for win8?

check all your hardware first as jim said,
then open your project in safe mode, this will rule out any vst plug ins of synths tht may be or have become corrupt in your projects.

hold down cntr while opening your project=safe mode.

Learned something new, I always hold the SHIFT key when opening a project to invoke safe mode.
