No need to "record" anything, just drag the pattern into your midi track wherever you want it to be.

Drag and drop is one option for the MIDI patterns. You can play the session drummer patterns and record them if you wish. The patterns are triggered by MIDI notes 27 (Eb2) through 34 (Bb2).

here, I have 3 vids on session drummer.
it might be worth checking them out.
sonars cake tv also has a few videos as well.

first watch this one, its called basic midi.

this will show you how to record using something like a keyboard to play the drums.
it uses studio drums but its the same theory.

this is called drum editing in the piano roll.

there is one more as well about setting up session drummer as a trigger device but this actually shows how to set up session drummer properly.

these vids were made in sonar x2 but its basically all the same.
the above comments are both spot on, these guys are correct.
the videos will just help with the visual aspect.

Yes there is lots of stuff on Youtube about Session Drummer 3 set ups and other things..It all loads up and plays fine, but I cant find anything on how to get the preset patterns into the tracks..preferably as separate audio tracks..if i drop and drag, midi info appears in the tracks but wont play..Say I wanted to put Kick drum on track 1 and Snare drum on Track 2....any advice?

Is that the MIDI track that was automatically created when you inserted SD3, with output correctly set to SD3? You're not trying to drag the beats on an audio track, are you? When you describe us what you do be specific about audio and MIDI tracks, that's important.
We can't see what you see, so the details need to be written.

The "normal" way is to have all the MIDI on one track, and have separate audio output tracks for the kitpieces. I haven't used SD3
so I don't know how many audio outputs it offers.

All MIDI tracks have to have the OUTPUT assigned to a playback device.
This can be internal or external.
Once you insert a softsynth it will be on the list of available outputs for all MIDI tracks. This is a very basic step in using Sonar to play MIDI.

So drag your midi data to a MIDI track and then assign that track to session drummer or any synth with drum playback like TTs1.
